NOTES AND QUOTES for a Thanksgiving Day in the Napa Valley:

Pacific Union College sophomore Lara Canders was selected as the California Pacific Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the dates of Nov. 16-23.

Canders, a native of Concord, averaged 10 points in a 2-2 weekend for the Pioneers. They lost to University of La Verne (77-47), beat Pomona-Pitzer (66-63), lost to Whittier College (95-44), and beat California Institute of Technology (56-46).

The two wins over the weekend provided the Pioneers with their most victories in a season since 2007-08.

Pacific Union will continue its 2009-10 schedule on Dec. 12 as it takes on the University of Great Falls in Lewiston, Idaho as part of the Wells Fargo Tournament.

Yedith Martinez was credited with the assist on Natalie Loyola’s first-half goal as the Solano Community College women’s soccer team beat Sierra-Rocklin Tuesday in the second round of the Northern California regional playoffs in Fairfield, 3-2.

Loyola went to Vintage High and Martinez is from Napa High.

The win gives Solano, the top seed, a 19-2-2 overall record.

The high school football season will start earlier in 2010 for Napa and Vintage, as the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section has instituted a new timeline for the regular season and playoffs.

Week 1 of the season is Sept. 3, but the date that a school may play a zero week game is Aug. 27.

The final weekend of the regular season is Nov. 5.

The first round of playoffs, for all divisions, is Nov. 12 and 13.

Justin-Siena head boys basketball coach Ray Particelli will be the guest of the “KVON SportsVine” Saturday.

The hour-long show, hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod, airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on KVON-1440 AM.

Eleven members of the Napa Valley Swim Team have qualified for Pacific Swimming’s 14-under Junior Olympics, to be held Dec. 4-6 at the Dolores Bengtson Aquatic Center in Pleasanton.

There are over 200 swim teams from throughout Pacific Swimming and in order to compete at this meet, swimmers must achieve Junior Olympic time standards for each event entered.

Those swimmers who have qualified, and who will be representing the NVST:

Cayd Roberts (9 years old), Grace Murphy (10), Megan Minor (11), Rose Ballantine (12), Madi Anderson (12), Mia Facey (12), Bradley John Erickson (12), Colby Gibbs (12), Alex Swanson (13), Nick Meyer (14) and Eric Boessenecker (14).

The Champions Tour’s 2010 tournament schedule will feature 26 official Charles Schwab Cup events and $51.5 million in official prize money, with the average tournament purse measuring in at a record $1.98 million. Next year’s season will take the Champions Tour to 15 states and three countries, including the Dominican Republic, Scotland and for the first time, South Korea.

The official season kicks off on the big island of Hawaii at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai (Jan. 18-24), with the first full-field event coming three weeks later at the ACE Group Classic, which will now be played at The Quarry in Naples, Fla. The season will conclude the first week of November with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, which will relocate from Sonoma to San Francisco’s Harding Park, in 2010-11.

The Champions Tour’s year-long competition, the Charles Schwab Cup, will once again offer $2.1 million in prize money to its five leading point-earners. Loren Roberts captured his second Charles Schwab Cup in the last three years by 319 points over John Cook to collect the Cup’s $1 million annuity in 2009.

Bernhard Langer won four times in ’09 en route to the Arnold Palmer Award, given to the Champions Tour’s leading money winner.

The upcoming season will have a stellar Champions Tour “rookie” class with such players as Fred Couples, a 15-time PGA Tour winner who captained the recent U.S. Presidents Cup team to victory at Harding Park; Paul Azinger, a 12-time winner on Tour and captain of the victorious 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team; and Corey Pavin, a 15-time winner on Tour and U.S. captain for the 2010 Ryder Cup in Wales.

Other players joining the Champions Tour in 2010 include PGA Tour stars Mark Calcavecchia and Kenny Perry.

Happy Thanksgiving.
