For the second year in a row, the Justin-Siena High School girls basketball team received the CIF North Coast Section Division IV Scholastic Championship Team Award. The Braves had a team GPA of 3.49.

“This award is a great achievement for our student-athletes,” said Braves’ head coach Mike Boles. “Our student-athletes understand the importance and demonstrate a tremendous work ethic on and off the court.

“I am very proud of each young lady as I have observed them work hard to achieve success in both endeavors. This award and these ladies define the term student-athlete.”

Team members include: Olivia Vera, Zina Zaia, Gianna Wright, Jenn Bettencourt, Shea Boles, Marissa Munoz, Claudia Munoz, Janelle Travis, Maleana Raymond, Marie Eberwien, Bailee Carter, Katherine Lee, Hailey Breakwell and Chelsea Lazzari.

Justin-Siena’s Janelle Travis, a junior guard, was named honorable mention for the North Bay on the San Francisco Chronicle’s All-Metro high school basketball team.

Travis, a transfer from Campolindo-Moraga, was the Offensive Player of the Year on the all-Napa County team and was First-Team all-Marin County Athletic League.

In her first year with the Braves, she averaged 14.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Travis also shot well from the 3-point line, making 48 treys.

Third baseman Brett Wallace, a former Justin-Siena star, is listed on the Springfield (Mo.) Cardinals’ roster. Springfield is the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Wallace, a two-time Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year for Arizona State, was St. Louis’ top pick in last year’s major league draft.

Last year, he became the only player in Pac-10 history to win back-to-back Triple Crowns, leading the Sun Devils to a second straight conference championship. He was the Pac-10 Player of the Year and a First Team All-American.

Left-hander Matt Yourkin will start the 2009 season with the Connecticut Defenders, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The Defenders are based in Norwich, Conn. Yourkin, a Napa High graduate, was the fifth overall pick of the San Francisco Giants in the Triple-A phase of the 2008 Rule 5 Draft.

Napa’s Emily Talley finished in a tie for 35th for the University of Colorado women’s golf team, shooting rounds of 72, 79 and 75 for a 226 total, at the MountainView Collegiate. It was played last month at the MountainView Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz.

Colorado tied for 11th.

St. Mary’s College second baseman Michael Gastelum went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs as the Gaels beat Portland 10-0 in a West Coast Conference game.

Gastelum, who is from St. Helena, is batting .258 with 11 RBIs.

Jordan Roualdes earned his fourth straight win, scattering six hits over five innings, as visiting Nebraska beat Oklahoma 11-9 March 29. Roualdes is a Justin-Siena graduate.

“Jordan gave up a few runs early, but I thought he was the key for us today,” Nebraska coach Mike Anderson said on the Huskers’ athletic Web site. “As much as it was an offensive day, I thought Roualdes was the key to it getting deeper into the game for us.”

Jimmy Cacho led the Santa Clara University men’s golf team, tying for 53rd with rounds of 78, 79 and 75 for a 232 total at the Western Intercollegiate last week at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz.

The Broncos finished 17th overall. Cacho went to Justin-Siena.
