Funeral services for James Earsell Mackbee, a former Vallejo resident who played five years for the Minnesota Vikings, are Friday at 11 a.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church (1735 Enterprise Dr., Building 3) in Fairfield. Mackbee passed away in Napa on Nov. 9 due to complications from a stroke that he suffered in 2005. He was 68.

Mackbee was a cornerback from 1965 to 1969 for the Vikings. He was a member of the Minnesota team that reached Super Bowl IV in 1970.

Mackbee went to Vallejo High, was a three-sport athlete at Vallejo Junior College, and went on to Utah State. He was signed by Minnesota as a non-drafted player and appeared in 66 regular season games, intercepting 15 passes for 280 yards with one touchdown.

He is a member of the Solano Community College Athletic Hall of Fame and the Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame.

It was Mackbee’s wish to return to California so that he could be with family. He returned to the North Bay area in October.

“He was a very gifted athlete and such a joy to play with,” said Bob Mansfield, a longtime Vallejo City Unified School District teacher and coach, who played basketball and baseball with Mackbee at Vallejo Junior College. “He was a very good baseball player as well.”

Mackbee graduated from Vallejo High in 1959.

Dino Alessio will be the guest of the “KVON SportsVine” Saturday. Alessio is a member of KVON’s announcing team for the station’s coverage of local high school football.

The hour-long show airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on KVON-1440 AM.

Lindsey Dreher is a junior forward for the UC San Diego women’s basketball team.

Ross, a defensive lineman, had two solo tackles and two assisted stops.

Ross played football at Vintage High and Solano Community College.

Sioux Falls (11-0) opens the NAIA playoffs Saturday against No. 14 Minot State. The Cougars are looking to defend their national championship.

Sioux Falls has been ranked No. 1 the entire season.

Lynne Cowen of Sierra-Rocklin was the individual medalist and Sacramento City College won the team title Tuesday to highlight the California Community College Athletic Association Women’s Golf Championships. Both schools are members of the Big 8 Conference.

Cowen shot 77-75 — 152 to win by three strokes at Kings Country Club in Hanford. Kayla Riede of Sac City was second, shooting 79-76 —  155.
