NOTES AND QUOTES for a Sunday in the Napa Valley:

Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and punter Shane Lechler were named to the Associated Press All-Pro First Team for their accomplishments during the 2008 NFL regular season.

It is the fourth career AP All-Pro selection for Lechler, while Asomugha was one of 15 first-time All-Pro selections. Both Asomugha and Lechler were also named as starters for the 2009 Pro Bowl.

In addition, wide receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins was named to Sports Illustrated’s All-Pro team as a punt returner. Asomugha and Lechler were also named First Team All-Pro by Sports Illustrated.

For Asomugha, this year’s AP All-Pro selection is the first of his six-year NFL career. He was also named All-Pro by other recognized media outlets in 2006. A Raiders’ first-round selection in the 2003 NFL Draft, he finished second for Oakland in passes defensed with nine in 2008, and his interception on Nov. 9 against Carolina brought his career total to 10. Asomugha tied for third in the NFL in interceptions in 2006 with eight. He also recorded an interception in 2007.

The AP All-Pro selection is the fourth for Lechler, and marks the sixth time that a recognized media outlet has named the punter All-Pro. Lechler led the AFC in punting with a 48.8-yard average, and his net average of 41.2 yards per punt during the 2008 campaign also led the AFC and ranked first in the NFL. A fifth-round pick by the Raiders out of Texas A&M in 2000, Lechler has 682 career punts for 31,902 yards in nine pro seasons and his 46.8-yard punting average is the highest in NFL history for players with at least 250 attempts.

Vicky Deely, a Justin-Siena High School graduate, had five points and six rebounds for UC Davis in the Aggies’ 56-52 loss Thursday to UC Riverside in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game.

Blaize Boles had five points and three rebounds for William Jessup University in an 80-79 loss to UC Santa Cruz in a men’s basketball game last week.

Boles went to Justin-Siena.

The San Jose Sharks will have a presence at the NHL All-Star Game later this month.

The Sharks’ Todd McLellan will serve as the head coach for the Western Conference for the All-Star Game, which will be played in Montreal on Jan. 24. Versus will carry the game starting at 3 p.m.

McLellan will be making his All-Star game debut and becomes only the second first-year NHL coach in league history to coach an All-Star team.

This season, McLellan has coached the Sharks to an NHL-best 30-5-5 record. They’re the league’s first team to 30 wins this season.

Meanwhile, Sharks right wing Devin Setoguchi has been named to the Sophomore Team at the YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck that will take place on Jan. 24 in Montreal during the 2009 All-Star Game Weekend.

Showcasing the best of the league’s young talent, the 10-player sophomore and rookie teams will face off as part of the 2009 Honda/NHL SuperSkills.

Setoguchi is third on the Sharks with 37 points, which places him fourth amongst all second-year players. Among league leaders, he is tied for 12th in goals (18), tied for 13th in even-strength points, and tied for eighth in even-strength goals.

The 2009 NHL All-Star Weekend in Montreal will celebrate the Montreal Canadiens’ centennial season.

The 2009 Champions Tour season, which gets under way Jan. 23-25, will have 26 official Charles Schwab Cup events.

The season concludes the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1 at the Schwab Cup Championship at historic Sonoma Golf Club. Only the leading money winners get into the field.
