Freshman forward Max Alvarez scored a goal to tie the game in the 75th minute of play, but the Sacramento State men’s soccer team lost Sunday to UCLA, 2-1, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles.
Alvarez, a Napa High School graduate and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s leading scorer, connected on a blast to the far left corner of the goal from 25 yards out for his 10th goal of the season.
With the goal, Alvarez tied Jamel Mitchell for second on the school’s single-season goals list.
Alvarez took three shots, including two on goal, against UCLA.
Sacramento State finished the season with a 12-6-3 record, with the 12 victories setting a school single-season record. The Hornets earned their first NCAA berth after winning both the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season and conference tournament titles.
The Napa Valley College women’s volleyball team, the Bay Valley Conference co-champion, will travel to Sacramento City College tonight to play the Panthers in the first round of the Northern California regionals. The match will begin at 7 p.m. The 16th seed Storm will face top seed Sacramento City.
Vicky Deely scored four points on 2-of-3 shooting and had two steals in eight minutes for UC Davis in the Aggies’ 76-51 loss to No. 2 Stanford Sunday in a women’s basketball. The loss evened the Aggies’ record at 2-2 while the Cardinal improved to 4-0.
Carly Dowis of Napa scored a goal for No. 1 seed Solano Community College in the first half and the Falcons won in the opening round of the Northern California community college women’s soccer playoffs, 5-0 over Chabot-Hayward Saturday.
Dowis, a sophomore midfielder, is a 2008 Napa High graduate.
Solano (18-2-2 overall) is the Bay Valley Conference champion and is ranked in state and national polls.
Jocelyn Phillips of Napa swam on Florida State’s winning 400 free relay team in the women’s division of the Georgia Tech Invitational Sunday in Atlanta. Phillips is a Vintage High graduate and also swam for the Napa Valley Swim Team.
Torrance won the team title, shooting a 396 total, at the CIF Girls California State Golf Championships at Poppy Hills last week.
For the third year in a row and the fourth time in five years, the south Los Angeles high school captured the trophy.
Torrey Pines was second (404), followed by Granada-Livermore (416), St. Francis-Sacramento (418), Peninsula (424), and Alameda (434).
Jenny Shin of Torrance was the individual champion, firing a 71, and winning by one shot over Rachel Morris (72) of Carlsbad.
The event marked the last tournament as an amateur for Shin, who has already qualified for the Futures Tour and will embark on a professional career in 2010.
In the tournament’s six-year history, no Northern California team has come out on top.
