Perfect weather, a well-run meet, and the best track and field venue in the country. That was the combination that allowed the athletes from Napa Track Club to have their most impressive showing of the season.

The club sent 16 members to Eugene, Oregon for the Track City Classic, which was held at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.

Coach Tony Giovannoni said that despite the long drive, this is the Club’s favorite meet to attend.

“The facilities, the officiating, everything is first-rate. Plus the support from the community is amazing,” he said.

Eugene’s nickname of “Track Town U.S.A.” is derived from its rich legacy of contributions to the sport.

Hayward Field has hosted the Olympic Trials and the NCAA Championships numerous times, and is also home to the annual Prefontaine Classic.

The young athletes who compete in the Track City Classic get a taste of what competing at the highest level is like.

For most, it’s the first time to see their names and performances broadcast on the stadium’s giant video scoreboards.

Giovannoni said that the Club has been making this trip for almost 30 years.

“It’s become a tradition, and the kids really look forward to this meet. They always seem to perform very well here.”

This year was no exception. Competing against teams from four Western states, the Club’s athletes achieved 22 new personal best performances and collected a total of 35 medals, five of them gold.

Brendan Cardey, 14, accounted for a pair of the Club’s victories.

He won the Youth Boys javelin throw with a new personal best throw of 144 feet, 4 inches.

He followed that up with a win in the triple jump (33-71⁄4) and also collected a fourth-place medal in the high jump (5-11⁄4).

In the Youth Girls division (ages 13-14), Napa’s three athletes combined to earn medals in all 10 events that they entered.

Claire Miller earned the gold medal in the triple jump (31-33⁄4), silver in the 800 meter run (2:32.9), and bronze in the javelin (87-3).

Ashley Augustus also took home three medals, including the gold in the 3000-meter racewalk (18:04.61).

She added a pair of fourth-place medals in the 1500- and 3000-meter runs (5:18.09 and 11:35.32).

Taylor Hollabaugh went 4-for-4 in the medal hunt, earning second in the 3000 racewalk (18:33.6), third with a new personal best in the triple jump (30-53⁄4), fourth in the 800m (2:37.43) and sixth in the 1500m (5:30).

Competing in the Young Men division (17-18), Kevin Cardey also collected four medals.

He earned gold in the high jump (6-0), but his best performances came in a pair of second-place finishes. He improved his long jump personal record to an impressive 21-61⁄4, and his javelin throw to a new best of 154-2.

Cardey’s fourth medal came as a member of the Club’s 4x400 relay team, where he teamed with Rudy Reyes, Michael Bozzini and Quinn Stallcup to take home the bronze medal (3:37.41).

Bozzini also collected an individual silver medal in the 800 meters (2:01.62), while Reyes finished sixth in the same race (2:06.83).

Anthony Zoller picked up a pair of fourth-place medals for his performances in the Young Men’s triple jump (39-71⁄4) and javelin throw (87-10).

An impressive personal best in the Youth Boys high jump earned Chris Bozzini, 14, the silver medal (5-51⁄4).

He also recorded a personal best in the javelin (130-3) to claim the bronze medal in that event.

In the Young Women’s division, 17-year-old Megan Zoller claimed two medals.

She finished second in the high jump (4-10) and fifth in the javelin (80-51⁄2).

Eric Zoller had three medal-winning performances in the Intermediate Boys division (15-16), and all three were new personal bests.

He finished fourth in the 400m (54.35), sixth in the 100m (11.76), and sixth in the 200m (23.96).

In the Intermediate Girls competition, Lauren Cardey finished third in the high jump (4-8), while her sister Jennifer was fourth in the triple jump (31- 33⁄4).

The Club’s youngest competitor was Cate Bozzini.

She picked up a pair of medals in the Midget Girls division (11-12) by finishing third in the long jump (11-9) and fifth in the high jump (3-10).

Napa Track Club’s final competition of the season, the National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championship, begins July 28 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
