Questioning my beliefsI know I’ve talked about it a lot, but when you spend more than 4-6 hours a day in rehearsal for the same play, it’s hard to get it out of your head. The Last Days of Judas Iscariot has been a life-changing play for me, not just in the sense that I’m learning more and more about my chosen career path, but in the sense that it has really made me examine what it means to be religious, faithful, or even spiritual.

My guidelines for legalizing marijuanaI’m a college student. On a daily basis I hear conversations about getting “hammered,” “wasted,” and “stoned out of my mind.” Even when I was in high school, these things weren’t uncommon, both in people I knew and stories I heard of people I didn’t know. It’s viewed by teenagers as the “healthy cigarette,” or a “safe” way of getting a good buzz. Of course, we all know that’s not true. Research has shown that marijuana does a world of hurt to the teenage brain – not only is it physically addictive, according to teendrugabuse.us, 100,000 teenagers a year are treated for an addiction to marijuana, and show signs and symptoms nearly identical to those of someone experiencing a nicotine withdrawal.

College classes are easy, thanks to a New Tech educationI’m sure by now people are sick of me playing up the great features of my high school, New Technology High. I feel as though I cannot say enough about the amazing education that New Tech offered me, but up until this point, that great education I felt I was getting was really only theoretical – it hadn’t yet been tested in the real world. And now that it has been … I’m sorry, but I can only say more great things about New Tech – get used to it!

A very special birthday messageI’ve never done a lot of dating (that is to say, I’ve never really asked anyone out, and no one’s really asked me). It used to bother me – a lot. “Why does everyone else have a boyfriend and not me?” I’d whine to my mother, friends, or really anyone who would listen. It’s teenage angst, I guess, and that certainty that not having a significant other makes you the ultimate freak of nature, because of course you are the only person in history that has ever been single for any length of time. Ever.

Are college parties worth it?In three days, I will be moving in to my dorm room at CSU Chico for the first time. I’m actually going to be living with one of my best friends in an off-campus dorm, but the basic idea is still the same – collective recreation rooms, cafeteria food, and living ‘round the clock with friends.

Nothing for kids in Napa? Are you serious? This summer has been amazing. Having graduated from high school, there’s the mixture of excitement and nervousness about going to college, and the new connections I’ve made with old friends. I haven’t been bored for a single second this summer, which brings me to my topic — things for kids to do in Napa.

My Fathers Day thoughts of my DadEveryone has a person who influenced their lives above all others. Just about everyone I know can identify someone who has been instrumental in making them the person that they are -- from the grandpa who taught him how to ride a bike, to the elderly neighbor who taught her how to make really good brownies. We all have someone who has been a constant source of support, a good shoulder to cry on, and an endless supply of good advice.

Welcome to America - now speak whatever you wantEnglish is the hardest language to learn. It's a tacitly accepted fact that English, with all its rules (and millions of exceptions) is a very difficult language, sometimes to a point where even native English-speakers have considerable trouble.
