The jinxA few weeks ago, after our grandsons had completed their homework assignments and enjoyed another one of grandma’s great meals, Phil, now 9, was watching his favorite cartoon show “SpongeBob SquarePants,” and Robbie, all of 13, joined grandpa in the den for a man-to-man talk.
You better be right! The other day my backyard neighbor Tom McNicholas, a fine man and fellow New Yorker out of Brooklyn, handed me a New York Times clipping titled, “‘The Face of Danger’ Is Changing.”

It’s great to be young15The other day happened to be a scorcher. Although the next day’s Napa Valley Register reported a high of 95 degrees, Phil, now 9, knew better. He’d pointed out to his grandpa as we drove home from his school that our car’s outside temperature gauge showed a sizzling 105 degrees.

It's overThirty-two years ago this very morning I was awakened from a deep sleep by my wife. Shaking my shoulder she excitedly poured out those wonderful words, “It’s over — ‘Son of Sam’ has been arrested!”
It ain’t what you sayThe other day my Napa friend Rita Guthrie, recently back from a trip to her native New York and Washington, D.C., handed me a copy of the New York Times Sunday magazine.

Independence DayEach Fourth of July holds memories of a town and county proud of its heritage, and on this past Saturday the evening skies over our homes in the Napa Valley were lit up by fireworks once more — from Lincoln Avenue in Calistoga down past the Veterans Home in Yountville to the wonderful display of pyrotechnics at Napa’s Veterans Memorial Park and the show in American Canyon.

You gotta take your swingWith Napa schools out, I’m spending more time these days with my two best pals and grandsons, Robbie, nearing 13, and Phil, who’ll be 9 tomorrow. I thank God for the time I’ve been given to share some of their adventures and maybe teach them something of value along the way.

Whatta the odds?A letter arrived the other day from our dear and longtime friends, Terry and Joe Gressert of Punta Gorda, Fla.

The students were taking final examinations ending at noon each day last week, and soon the long summer vacation would begin.

But never heart forgetMemorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, was instituted in 1868 for those boys in blue and gray who had been killed in our Civil War. Since World War I the day has been observed as a remembrance for the young men, and now women, who have given their all in our nation’s wars.
