Dear editor, I am worried about the push by President Obama and his supporters to rush a very expensive health reform bill that includes a government option through Congress as quickly as possible.
This legislation is close to 2,000 pages of regulations that very few have actually had the time to read and understand. Obama is taking lots of time to decide about Afghanistan, so why the rush on this legislation unless they want to pass it before even more people turn against it than already have? Many polls already show that the majority of Americans don’t want the federal government coming between them and their medical care. This bill, with its insistence upon a government option, seems to be more about further government control over the private sector than about improving health care.
Most Americans (according to many polls) are happy with the medical care they have, and the problems that do exist with the medical insurance companies can be solved with a few simple laws and a few other adjustments to the existing system. We don’t need a trillion-dollar government insurance program that will totally destroy the system we have now. The government option will eventually destroy private insurance companies and lead to a single-payer, government-controlled health care system. Socialized medicine always leads to rationing, reduction of quality care, long waits and destruction of any competition or choice for consumers.
Do you really want the federal government to eventually run health care for everyone? Look how they have run Medicare, Social Security system and the post office into the ground. Do you want your experience at the doctor’s office to be like a trip to the DMV?
