Particulate matter caused by smoke from two large Northern California wildfires are impacting air quality, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District warns. The Moonlight fire in Plumas National Forest and the Lick fire near Morgan Hill are affecting air conditions in Napa County, among others in the area.

Smoke can irritate the eyes and airways, causing coughing, a scratchy throat and irritated sinuses.

“Its prudent to take precautions if your area is being affected by fire,” said Jack Broadbent, executive director of the Air District. “If it’s smoky outside, keep your windows and doors closed.” And minimize exposure by staying indoors, he said.

Other precautionary measures include using the re-circulate mode on home or car air conditioner and postponing outdoor activities.

Children, seniors and those with asthma or other respiratory problems are most susceptible to health problems due to high particulate levels./Register
