Fishing report: Los Vaqueros Reservoir hosting Family Fishing Day Saturday
By BILL RYAN
For the Register
Here’s a look at the latest local angling action:
California Delta
Fred LeDrew and I worked Frank’s Tract over with a fine-tooth striper comb a week ago, without much to show for it.
The three stripers that we caught and released wouldn’t have totaled four pounds glued together.
I must be the jinx — Fred said he and other partners have caught “hundreds” of stripers this season.
We worked his favorite lures and some suggested by Chad Hole of Sweeney’s Sports. They included a Sassy-Shad crank bait, lipless cranks, swim baits and jerk baits. Truth be told, we only saw two other hook-ups among the dozens of boats all around us.
This is my third stinko trip to the Delta on private boats this year.
But, don’t lose heart — the bite has been excellent and the prediction is that it will stay good right up to the heavy rains.
They in turn will trigger the sturgeon bite. Reports all around the Delta tell of large numbers of sturgeon rolling on the surface.
Los Vaqueros Reservoir
Saturday is Family Fishing Day from 7 a.m. until noon.
Prizes will be awarded for the top 10 best trout caught by kids and welcome bags given to all anglers under 16. Call (925) 371-2628 for reservations.
One note on access to the lake — the north entrance on Vasco Road will be closed for repairs this weekend. Use the Marina or South entrances from the Brentwood side. Go to www.acgov.org/pwa for directions.
Good trout baits are Power Eggs and Power bait in bright colors as well as night crawlers. Use light line, light weights and short casts.
Stripers from 15 to 22 pounds have been caught in the past week. Best bet is the south cove using anchovy, swim baits or lipless crank baits.
Catfish to 18 pounds are on the chew. Try chicken livers, anchovy or night crawlers. Some 2- to 6-pound salmon have been fooled by trollers.
Napa River
It’s hard to tell when a fishery is starting to shut down. I hear that “the bite seems off,” etc.
But, you can still catch stripers in the river from in town on down. Continue to use your favorite system.
Don’t worry about the bite until it rains really hard for three straight days.
Then, get out your sturgeon gear.
Not far from home, Joel Sinkay at Leonard’s Bait in Port Sonoma (762-7818) said he’s getting a steady supply of larger bullheads, and shrimping is improving.
He reported a couple of sturgeon caught in Sonoma Creek. Often, this area is the harbinger of sturgeon action to come in the south river.
Bodega Bay
Crab season opens Saturday! Remember the biggest and the best crabs come early in the season.
Call Wil’s Bait & Tackle (875-2323) to see if they can fit you in.
