The Vintage girls water polo team kicked off what it hopes is a deep playoff run with an 11-4 decision over Modesto on Friday at Johansen High School.

After a defense-oriented first quarter, the Crushers took control of the match by outscoring Modesto 4-1 in the second.
The lead swelled to 8-3 after three periods.

Corinne Schafle led the way for the Crushers with five goals, two assists, six steals and one earned exclusion; Katrina Husted had two goals, one a 5-meter penalty shot earned by Heather O’Connor on seven shots, three assists, 11 steals and two earned exclusions; and Katherine Pella had one goal on two shots, one steal and one field block.
Pella’s goal came on an almost perfectly-placed cross-goal pass from Schafle that she put into the goal behind the goalie and just out of her reach.

Lexi Baldwin recorded one goal, one assist, one steal, one earned exclusion and one field block; Heather O’Connor had one goal, one assist, one steal and one earned exclusion; Chelsea Murdock had one goal on a well-placed pass from Katrina Husted as the final buzzer sounded; and Bri McFadden had one shot and one steal.
Schafle won a sprint, while Olivia Husted posted 10 saves in goal, one steal and one assist.

The Crushers defended on three of the six player-excluded plays and scored on three of their five player-advantage plays.

The Crushers next face Tokay-Lodi at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Napa High fell to Turlock, 7-6, however, in what Vintage coach Julian Szmidt termed an “upset.”

Other results for the day — Lincoln 14, Fairfield 4; St. Francis 14, Oakdale 4; Tokay 6, Los Banos 4; Davis 18, Lodi 3; Johansen 24, Franklin-Elk Grove 1; St. Mary’s 7, Merced 2.
