The Napa High School boys soccer team avenged last fall’s season-ending playoff loss to Franklin with a 2-1 Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I opening-round win in Elk Grove on Friday afternoon.

“The entire defense, midfield, forwards, everybody played an outstanding game,” said Indians head coach Felipe Nieto, whose club improved to 15-7-1 overall.
“We came in with a lot of confidence. The team was prepared, and we battled throughout the game.”

Franklin scored the first goal of the match in the 16th minute for a 1-0 lead at intermission, but Napa’s Diego Hernandez got the Indians on the board 18 minutes into the second half for a 1-1 draw.
He dribbled through a pair of defenders and ripped a shot into the left side of the net.

Carlos Ochoa then propelled Napa into the second round of the playoffs with a 25-yard free kick late in the match.
“It gives me satisfaction as a coach to see the team create so many opportunities,” said Nieto.

Napa will play Friday’s Davis-Sheldon winner on Tuesday.
