VACAVILLE — Maybe the Napa High football team will use what it saw on the other side of the ball Friday night as motivation to prepare better in the offseason.
That’s what head coach Troy Mott is hoping for from his returning players after the Indians absorbed their second straight blowout loss, 60-7 to a Vacaville squad that showed no weaknesses.
It was the most lopsided loss in the history of the series between programs that won Sac-Joaquin Section Division I titles in 2006 and 2007. According to the Vacaville game program's year-by-year breakdown of the series, the most either team had previously won by was 35 points in 1986 and 2002.
“They’re a great, well-coached team,” Mott said of the Bulldogs (8-1 overall, 4-0 MEL), who ran and passed at will against a Napa team plagued by injuries to several of its top players. “They also bust their butts in the offseason, and when you do that and work hard every single day, you’re gonna stay healthy.”
The Indians (4-5 overall, 2-2 MEL) did their best to grab the early momentum after starting the game’s first drive at their own 20-yard line, as quarterback Cody Thompson fired a perfect pass to C.J. Cunningham for a 42-yard gain to the Bulldogs’ 38 on the first play.
“We wanted to make that play work early on and try to make us believe that, yeah, we belong,” Mott said. “It was a nice throw and a nice catch.”
But Thompson was intercepted four plays later by Jeff Beasley, who returned it to midfield. On the next play, Quincy Forte (six carries, 93 yards) swept right and scampered 51 yards to paydirt untouched for a 7-0 lead.
Despite a season-high 78 receiving yards by Cunningham on five catches, Napa punted three times and was held on downs on its next four series. In between, Vacaville’s potent wing-T offense got touchdown runs of 11 yards from Hudson Buck, 11 yards from Jimmy Hines and 8 yards from Beasley, and a 70-yard scoring pass from Tyler Irwin to Blakelyn Burks.
Napa finally got on the board with 2:06 left in the half with a 12-play drive capped by Cody Jensen’s 2-yard TD run. Jonathan Douma’s PAT made it 35-7.
But the Bulldogs responded with a 11-yard scoring hookup from Irwin to C.J. Jacoby with 16 seconds left for a 41-7 halftime lead. A 52-yard scoring scamper from Buck and LaRyan King’s 23-yard TD fumble return in the opening minutes of the third quarter made it 54-7.
“We tried to throw the ball quite a bit in the first half, but we were average at best at it,” Mott said.
“We had protection breakdowns, we were not delivering the ball where it belonged, we dropped passes … we just didn’t do the things that go into passing successfully.”
In the post-game huddle, Jensen and lineman Max Kampton exhorted their teammates to get it together as the Indians prepare for next Friday’s Big Game against Vintage.
“We didn’t do a good job bouncing back from last week’s loss (46-14 to Fairfield),” Mott said. “As a team, everyone of us has to take this to heart, take its personally and do something about it. We didn’t this week. We came here after getting our tails handed to us last week and did the same exact things. We didn’t cover people, we didn’t tackle, we didn’t block.
"Hopefully, at some point, pride will kick in and we’ll stop being a doormat and start stepping up and playing football — not just playing football, but being tough when we play football. I’m sick of seeing arm tackles from our defense, not finishing blocks on offense, and I’ve seen enough broken-down coverages to last a lifetime. I hope at some point that together we can fix it.”
• Napa JV 21, Vacaville 14
Alex Ceja’s leaping interception at the Indians’ goal line and 15-yard return with 51 seconds left sealed a wild win in a battle of MEL co-leaders Friday night.
“We’re still in first place, and now it all comes down to the Big Game next week,” head coach Nick Tedesco said of his Indians (7-2 overall, 4-0 MEL) facing Vintage (3-1 MEL) next Friday at Memorial Stadium.
Ceja opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, and a failed conversion run opened the door for Vacaville (3-1 MEL) to take a 7-6 lead a few minutes later. But the Bulldogs wouldn’t score again until the fourth quarter, thanks to a staunch defense led by Dillon Padilla (two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery), Mario Gagetta (one fumble recovery), Donato D’Adamo, Robert Horton, Dylan Becker, Michael Richmond and Randy Keen.
“We stopped their wing-T (offense rushing game) and got them out of their game plan,” Tedesco said.
Dom Good — one of several freshmen pulled up to the JV on after they ended their 8-2 season on Thursday — shared quarterback duties with Zach Sims and threw a 28-yard touchdown screen pass to Padilla just before halftime and added a conversion pass to Richmond for a 14-7 lead.
“I had half a practice with (Good) all week, but I met with him during milk breaks and he came to film sessions," Tedesco said. "He showed no jitters all night.”
Ceja added a 1-yard TD run and Angus McDonald kicked his second PAT to make it 21-7 late in the third quarter.
“The kids played their hearts out, made plays when they had to, and fought to the end,” Tedesco said.

I do agree that Napa high played scared. They better grow up by next week if they want to salvage a rather disappointing season. "

Why were there no cheerleaders at the Vacaville game? Geez, part of the kids being into the game and able to at least keep a positive attitude is the support they get externally.
We have had years of winning. It's not the coaches. They've showed they know how to prepare the kids and the game plan to at least be competitive.
Lets get behind this group positively and make sure they understand they can play well, beat Vintage and have a positive showing at least at the first game of the post season. "

We always know Napa will be out in force supprting their team and were dissapointed to not see any cheerleaders and a sparse crowd of Napa supporters.
We also were sorry you have been hit with injuries to some major players this year. Would have liked to see what a game we would have had with Napa at full strength.
Good luck next week with Vintage and hope to see you in the playoffs representing the MEL once again.
Looking forward to next years contest already! "
