Scene of the crime

Over the years, I’ve covered crime scenes and political demonstrations and sports events, talked to guitar players and government officials and gadflies. But until this week I have never studied the situation as people got drunk.

The Lush Life

Our kids life the high life; I mean, seriously. They have lux Britax car seats that any grown person would envy. Plush, padded seats, high backs for quick naps or just relaxing, adjustable seatbelts for comfort and padded arm rests and snacks on the side should they become peckish. I think all they need are magic fingers — the 21st century version that is, not the cheapy quarter-fed hotel cliché.

Teacher salaries

No one ever gets rich teaching. I doesn’t matter how good you are or where you work, the rewards of teaching are not financial. That said, I can’t complain that much about my salary. The party line is that teachers are poorly paid, but the truth is more nuanced. It all depends on your perspective.

Waking up to the history of nation's first people

There are many issues that haunt the first people of this nation. Since the beginning of European settlement, this country has taken land, violated treaties and failed to ratify treaties that were negotiated by official agents of the U.S. government. Some people were never even officially recognized as tribes.

A fine leader, a sweet event

Dear editor, I was fortunate to have been invited to the Chocolate and Wine Tasting fundraising event Doris Gentry put on. I drove to the event from the Los Angeles area and was impressed at all the participating businesses and vendors.  Doris did an excellent job in orchestrating the event. Good job, Doris! What a leader.

Dear editor, Napa Valley’s small-town gems are much harder to discover when their titles don’t end with sauvignon, franc or verdot.

Reviving the tradition of the Welcome Wagon

Dear editor, Napa Valley merchants and small business owners created a “welcome wagon” for new homeowners who just recently purchased their home in the Napa Valley.

One final thought before signing off

With my recent announcement that I am forming an exploratory committee to run for County Supervisor, my ability to write a blog column for NapaValleyRegister.com has come to an end.
