Last week: Vintage lost to Vacaville, 56-7. Armijo lost to Wood, 42-18.
Vintage drove 75 yards in nine plays for its only touchdown, Jackson Maher’s 29-yard pass to Brandon Gant with 4:09 to go the first quarter. The Crushers couldn’t get anything going in the second half, turning the ball over on a fumble and losing it on downs three times while gaining 153 yards.
Zach Zuniga carried 21 times for 111 yards and Alex Peterson caught three passes for 62 yards to lead the offense.
Last year: Vintage beat Armijo, 42-21.
This week: Something has to give, as two teams that are winless in the MEL meet in Week No. 9. Armijo has lost four in a row and has been outscored 297-155.
For Vintage, which has been outscored 357-76, it’s the worst start in school history. Vintage was tied with Vacaville 7-7 in the first quarter last week, but then it was all Bulldogs as they used a high-powered running game to wear down the Crushers.
Vintage coach Billy Smith said his team played one of its best games as far as being physical with Vacaville.
“I think we competed and I think we surprised them,” said Smith.
The Crushers still allowed 572 yards of total offense.
“We want to get a win going into the Big Game and we want to get a rhythm going offensively and defensively,” said Smith. “We want to prevent the big play, defensively. The kids’ spirits are still up — they want to get that ‘W.’ Our kids are still working hard.”
Armijo’s Brian Wilson has passed for 909 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Indians’ Malachi Kuidis has 698 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. — Marty James
