NOTES AND QUOTES for a Wednesday in the Napa Valley:
Bob Barbarick, owner of Balloons Above The Valley in Napa, won the singles/master/60-plus division at the Waterford Crystal 2009 World Handball Championships at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Ore., last month.
Barbarick, a Napa resident, was among 1,000 participants from 22 countries. There were 59 players in Barbarick’s division, with the event lasting six days. Barbarick won five matches.
For taking first place, Barbarick received a Waterford Crystal engraved bowl. The World Handball Championships are held every three years.

Kelsey Scanlon, a starting outside hitter for Justin-Siena High School for three years, is playing well as a freshman for the Emerson College volleyball team. Emerson is located in Boston.
Scanlon had four kills, eight digs and two blocks in Emerson’s 3-2 win over Rivier College Oct. 24. She had five kills and eight digs in Emerson’s 3-1 win over Eastern Connecticut State in Willimantic, Conn., Oct. 22. In a 3-0 sweep of Suffolk University, she had five kills, three service aces and four digs on Oct. 20.
Emerson plays in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
As a senior, Scanlon was First-Team All-Napa County, as she registered a team-leading 11 kills per match for the Marin County Athletic League co-champion Braves.

Taylor Bickell of Napa finished fourth in the final event of the Northern California Golf Association’s Junior Tour season.
Playing in the girls championship flight of the Tour Championship, Bickell had rounds of 76 and 74 for a 150 total at Belmont Country Club in Fresno last weekend.
This concluded the second season of the NCGA Junior Tour.
The Junior Tour commences its third season March 13-14, 2010 at Brookside CC in Stockton.

Andy Medeiros of California Maritime Academy in Vallejo was named as the California Pacific Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Medeiros, a transfer from Napa Valley College, averaged 17.5 points and 2.5 rebounds during an 0-2 weekend for the Keelhaulers.
Medeiros is a 6-foot-1 guard. Cal Maritime is an NAIA Division II program.
He averaged 15 points a game as a freshman for NVC, then averaged 15.7 points as a sophomore.

San Francisco State held a short ceremony before its men’s soccer game against Cal State Stanislaus Sunday, recognizing five seniors, including Spencer Schwandt of Napa.
The Gators closed out their 2009 season with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Stanislaus. It was the eighth overtime match of the season for San Francisco.
Schwandt is a Vintage graduate.

Justin-Siena (3-5 overall, 3-2 Marin County Athletic League) is one of eight teams on the bubble in this week’s Redwood Empire football rankings, assembled by CalHiSports.com correspondent Harold Abend.

Lindsay Brown is averaging 10.30 set assists, 1.01 kills and 1.84 digs per game for the Sonoma State volleyball team, which is ranked 18th in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
Brown is from Napa and is a senior setter. She also has 39 service aces.

Kellie Detweiler scored a goal for the Menlo College women’s soccer team in a 4-0 win over Bethany in a California Pacific Conference game in Atherton last week. Detweiler went to Vintage and played soccer at Solano Community College.
Paige Cruz, meanwhile, made two saves in goal for Menlo in a 4-1 win over Mills in Oakland.

KVON-1440 AM will carry Friday night’s Napa-Vacaville Monticello Empire League football game from Tom Zunino Stadium. KVON Sports Director Ira C. Smith will handle the play-by-play coverage and will be joined in the booth by Terry Simpkins and Dino Alessio. The station’s broadcast begins at 7 p.m.
KVON will also have reports from Napa Memorial Stadium, where Armijo and Vintage play Friday. Mike Mitchell and Mark McLeod will have the call.
