By Register Staff
The Napa Junior Girls Softball League’s fall ball Halloween Bash Tournament at Napa Valley Language Academy turned out to be a pitcher’s duel in the minors division, which is made up of players ages 7 to 10.
In the second game of the Saturday pool play format, Kaylie Martindale of the Firecrackers and Cassidy Schweizer of the Giants each threw a no-hitter, combining for 31 strikeouts. The Giants won, 1-O.
Martindale, 10, is a left-hander. She had 15 strikeouts over the first five innings. In the sixth inning, she walked the first batter and struck out the second. The game’s only run scored on a fielding error.
In the first game of the day, Martindale pitched three innings, striking out six.
Schweizer, 9, is a right-hander who had 15 strikeouts in six innings. She hit a batter in the first inning and walked one in the second and third innings each. She had very good support defensively.
In the first game of the day, Schweizer had four strikeouts in two innings.
Meanwhile, in the championship game of the minors division, Boom Boom Pows beat the Giants, 9-8, in extra innings. Maria Helena Borges had a three-run home run, Kaitlyn Kiehl had the game-winning hit to score Borges from second base with international tie-breaker in effect, and Kelsey Bailey pitched all eight innings and struck out 19 while also hitting a double. Cheyanne Garcia had a clutch base hit to score Melia Tharp.
A double play was turned by Tharp, Emily Ellis and Borges.

And to Kaylie and Cassidy, awsome pitching! It is rare to see a game like that in the minor division. Nice work!
Lastly, thank you Napa Register for a great article covering our Halloween Bash Tournament. You really showed how exciting and fun our games can be, even at an early age!
