Make your voice heard on school changes

Dear editor, the Napa Valley Unified School District is holding two community comment forums to discuss their “Program and Facilities Master Plan.” This is to discuss possible elementary school closures (2010-2011 Carneros, Capell, Wooden Valley), attendance boundaries and magnet schools. It is my opinion that there are several flaws in this plan. Many children and their families will be severely affected if this plan is allowed to be put in place. I implore community members (taxpayers) to come and let their voices be heard at these meetings. Please do not let a small handful of politicians decide what is best for our children and our communities.

Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Harvest Middle School, 7-8:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Nov. 18, Redwood Middle School; 6:30-8 p.m.

" sorry Kim, but I guess your initial research didn't look indepth at who was on the Facilities Task Force that made the recommendations to the School Board. There were several community members, parents, district employees, residents of the area where schools would be closed, local business owners on the committee.

I hope that the school district is allowed to hold a civil meeting without outrage from parents with misinformation like what you have already put in print Mrs. Smith. Check out the names of people that were on the committee, its online on the district's website "

" I wish I could be there to show support for Carneros Elementary, but unfortunately, I will be in Chico attending my college classes, which my grade-school education at Carneros prepared me for.

Don't close the schools! "

" I hope people do show up to support our public officials who have worked long and hard to make these difficult decisions. They need to look at the financial health for the entire school district not just the desires of a few parents. "

" My research shows that at many elementary schools the kids come from OUT of the schools' boundaries. They have open-enrolled to schools other than their own neighborhood schools. I don't include charter or alternative schools. But why keep Mt. George open when 61% of the kids don't live in the area? How about West Park and Vichy(again, NOT the alternative program) where 59% of the kids at each are from outside the district-specified boundaries. Then there's Bel Aire, Browns Valley and Snow at 57%, 36% and 42%, respectively. Then look at Carneros - the school chosen for closure every few years because the socioeconomic status of most of the parents isn't the same as Mt. George or Vichy or Browns Valley. Yet those schools aren't educating their area kids; they're teaching kids who come from elsewhere. Some Carneros kids live here but most come from the NVLA area because Carneros is considered their "neighborhood" school. Why close Carneros? Because few parents are college-educated professionals with the means to fight back. Most of the parents are working days and hours and jobs that most of us wouldn't tolerate. I just can't see NVUSD telling the doctors, dentists, lawyers and vintners of BV or Vichy that they're closing their successful schools. Yet it's closer to happening to Carneros because the parents, for the most part, are not professionals. When an NVUSD board member said he fears "a Latino Napa and an Anglo Napa" then reducing open enrollment would go a long way in rectifying that concern. "
