Scene of the crime
Over the years, I’ve covered crime scenes and political demonstrations and sports events, talked to guitar players and government officials and gadflies. But until this week I have never studied the situation as people got drunk.
Teacher salaries
No one ever gets rich teaching. I doesn’t matter how good you are or where you work, the rewards of teaching are not financial. That said, I can’t complain that much about my salary. The party line is that teachers are poorly paid, but the truth is more nuanced. It all depends on your perspective.
Two duel for top spot in state schools
One of the more obscure — and probably more important — of California's many political conflicts pits an organization called EdVoice against the California Teachers Association and other school unions.
Dealing with those 'too big to fail'
In the ideal world of economics, firms that take excessive risks go bankrupt, their competitors pick up the pieces and the economy marches on.
Let's do the right things, right now
Dear editor, what this state needs is responsible representation. We need those in positions of power to obey the oaths they took and enforce the laws we have on the books already.
Make your voice heard on school changes
Dear editor, the Napa Valley Unified School District is holding two community comment forums to discuss their “Program and Facilities Master Plan.” This is to discuss possible elementary school closures (2010-2011 Carneros, Capell, Wooden Valley), attendance boundaries and magnet schools. It is my opinion that there are several flaws in this plan. Many children and their families will be severely affected if this plan is allowed to be put in place. I implore community members (taxpayers) to come and let their voices be heard at these meetings. Please do not let a small handful of politicians decide what is best for our children and our communities.
Paying homage to local history
Dear editor, I loved the article by Mike Treleven in the Oct. 25 paper about the museums in Napa County. Thank you for highlighting some of Napa’s cultural institutions. Sometimes we forget that Napa has more than just amazing, world-class wines. We can also be a cultural tourism destination! Napa has so much to offer including wine, art, music, theater, food and a rich and diverse history.
One final thought before signing off
With my recent announcement that I am forming an exploratory committee to run for County Supervisor, my ability to write a blog column for NapaValleyRegister.com has come to an end.
