Valley College Notebook: Boyett gives Oregon boost

John Boyett, a redshirt freshman from Napa, started at the rover position and tied for second on the University of Oregon’s defense in tackles as the Ducks beat USC Saturday, 47-20, in a key Pacific-10 Conference game before a crowd of 59,592 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.
Boyett, named as an All-American and the State Player of the Year by maxpreps.com at Napa High School, had seven total tackles (six solo stops, one assist), including one tackle for a three-yard loss. He also broke up a pass for the Ducks (7-1 overall, 5-0 Pac-10), who are in first place in the conference.
The win was the seventh in a row for Oregon, which plays at Stanford on Nov. 7 at 12:30 p.m. The Ducks are ranked No. 7 this week in The Associated Press Top 25 poll and are No. 8 in the USA Today Top 25.

University of Colorado sophomore Emily Talley carded a final round 4-over-par 76, helping the Buffaloes to a tie for 14th place in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, their final tournament of the fall season in Boulder City, Nev.
Talley, a Napa resident who had earlier rounds of 71 and 81, finished in a tie for 36th individually for the 54-hole women’s golf event. There were 18 teams in the field, with Arizona taking the title at the Boulder Creek Golf Club last week.
Colorado begins its spring schedule Feb. 8-10 at the Northrop Grumman Regional in Palos Verdes.

Chardonnay Biter-Mundt of Napa swam the anchor leg on the University of Utah’s winning 400-yard freestyle relay team and placed in three other events as the Utah women’s swimming and diving team defeated UNLV Saturday at Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City, 149.5-148.5.
Biter-Mundt, a freshman who swam for Vintage High and the Napa Valley Swim Team, was also fourth in the 100 freestyle, fifth in the 50 freestyle, and sixth in the 200 freestyle.

Jimmy Cacho, a Justin-Siena graduate, tied for 65th for the Santa Clara University men’s golf team at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate last week in Las Cruces, N.M.
Cacho had rounds of 75, 72 and 75 for a 9-over-par 222 total at University Golf Course.
Santa Clara tied for fifth as a team.
Today through Wednesday, the Broncos will play in their final fall event of the year, the Turtle Bay College Invitational at Kahuku, Oahu, Hawaii.

The UC Davis women’s basketball team, which features former Justin-Siena star Vicky Deely, has been voted by the media to finish second in this year’s Big West Conference race.
Davis received six first-place votes and 155 points, finishing a close second to two-time defending Big West Conference champion UC Santa Barbara, which got 10 first-place votes and 162 points.
Davis will host Humboldt State on Thursday in an exhibition at 7 p.m.

Lindsay Brown played very well on “Senior Night” for the Sonoma State women’s volleyball team, recording four kills, 52 set assists, three service aces and 13 digs as the Seawolves rallied from a 2-1 match deficit to defeat Cal Poly Pomona in five sets at The Wolves’ Den in Rohnert Park Saturday, 3-2.
It was the final collegiate home match for Brown, Sonoma’s senior setter who is from Napa. The scores were 20-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 15-8.
The Seawolves (20-6 overall, 12-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association) earned their 20th win for the second consecutive season. They were ranked 19th nationally and third in last week’s NCAA Division II West Region poll.
In a 3-0 loss to Cal State San Bernardino Friday, Brown had two kills, 26 set assists, seven digs and three block assists.
Sonoma State now goes on the road for four matches to end the regular season.

Jason Lehman caught six passes for 55 yards with a long reception of 13 yards for Occidental College, but the Tigers lost Saturday to Cal Lutheran University, 24-14, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in Los Angeles.
Lehman is from Napa and played football at Justin-Siena.

Lea Wallace finished 28th in the women’s race for Sacramento State at the Big Sky Conference Cross Country Championships in Greeley, Colo., Saturday.
Wallace, a Vintage graduate who also runs on the track team for the Hornets, had a time of 21:02.20 as Sacramento was fourth.
Sacramento will next compete at the NCAA West Regional, which is on Nov. 14.

Devin Whitmill played 59 minutes for the Whitworth University women’s soccer team in a 2-1 Northwest Conference win over Willamette at Sparks Field in Salem, Ore., Saturday.
Whitmill is a defender who went to Napa High. Whitworth is 15-3-0, 12-2-0 in the NWC. The win clinched second place for Whitworth in the NWC standings.

Solano Community College’s football team fell 28-21 to visiting College of the Redwoods-Eureka Saturday in Fairfield.
The Falcons drop to 1-7 overall.
