Grape expo to cover a lot of ground

Napa Valley Grapegrowers President Bruce Phillips said he wouldn’t dare miss this year’s Wine & Grape Expo.

Michael Silacci, winemaker at Opus One in Oakville, has circled one seminar he really wants to attend.
Both men are looking forward to French perfume expert Alexandre Schmitt’s talk, titled “Fee Fie Foe Fum: Tracking Aroma Compounds to the Vineyard.” Those who attend the hour-long session will learn how to evaluate and identify aromas characteristic of the grapes grown in the Napa Valley.

Winemakers, grapegrowers and farmworkers — all will find something to talk about at the one-day expo a week from Thursday.
The day kicks off with a trade show and outdoor demonstrations featuring 50 manufacturers of vineyard equipment.

Discussions will range from how to produce high-quality wines from old vines or virus-affected vines to blending sessions for growers.
Seminars will cover such topics as climate change, understanding water deficiencies and biodynamics — approaching the soil as a living organism.

“For some who do not know a lot about the industry, this is a way to learn a lot in one day,” said Silacci, who is co-chair of the event along with grapegrower Sam Turner. “This year’s program was set up to appeal to the interests of a diverse group of people.”

At the end of the day, Silacci hopes everyone leaves with a “reference toolbox” to help them in their day-to-day operations.

Dr. Roger Boulton, from UC Davis, said he hopes his talk will nudge growers toward practices that will make their operations sustainable, both financially and environmentally.

In an interview, Boulton mentioned ideas such as capturing rain water coming off the roof, installing solar panels and even switching from traditional cleaning supplies to potassium salts.

“A lot of these ideas are not readily embraced. How much water is used and how many times is it used? Once is not a good answer. What would you invest to use it a second, third or fourth time?” he asked.

Outside the Lincoln Theater there will be plenty of demonstrations of new equipment.

One company will demonstrate dry ice barrel blasting to extend the life of used barrels. The process uses no water, no chemicals and does not require re-toasting.

Growers will check out the Shade Trailer, designed to give field workers a comfortable place to get a drink of water and a break from the sun. It can be pulled by a tractor, ATV or pick up.

The day will culminate at 3:30 p.m., with a wine tasting to celebrate the end of harvest.

Correction: The location of Opus One was misstated in an earlier version of this article.

" Um, where is this taking place at? And it "culminates at 3:30 p.m.", but when does it start? "
