Looking well beyond its own borders, the American Canyon City Council today will take up the question of sending additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan.
Last week City Councilman Ed West asked for a proclamation in support of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who broke ranks with other Democrats by supporting Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s request to send tens of thousands more troops to Afghanistan.
West’s proposal was immediately criticized by Councilwoman Joan Bennett, who said the troop debate and Feinstein’s views are not municipal issues.
But West — who lost his eldest son, Phillip, a U.S Marine, in Iraq five years ago and whose daughter, Megan, is now serving with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan — drafted the resolution over the weekend, saying the military deserves the additional troops military leaders have requested.
West then asked City Manager Rich Ramirez to poll city councilmembers to find out if the majority would agree to hold a public meeting to take up the resolution.
Vice Mayor Don Callison, West and Cindy Coffey called for the special meeting, to be held at 5:30 p.m. today in the City Council Chambers at 4381 Highway 29 in American Canyon, according to Ramirez. Garcia declined comment before the meeting, saying “it wouldn’t be appropriate.”
In a letter sent to the Register, West wrote that “Soldiers die due to strategic failures, equipment failures and even just plain bad luck, but no soldier should die because his/her command did not have enough troops to support him/her.”
In an interview, West characterized as “weak” Bennett’s contention that the troop issue is not a city matter.
“We have hundreds of citizens who are in the military right now,” he said. “We all know someone in there.”
On Monday, Bennett reiterated that she opposes the resolution and said she also opposes a troop surge in Afghanistan.
Earlier this year, Bennett was on the other end of the local vs. non-local debate.
In March, her resolution in support for all people regardless of sexual orientation was tabled. West and others said same-sex marriage was not a city matter, and that with the passage of Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage months earlier, that the people of California had already spoken.
Callison and Coffey joined West voting to table Bennett’s proposal.
On Monday, Bennett said she will have plenty more to say Tuesday, but declined to address the issue further until the meeting.
While Callison said he agrees with West that the United States needs either to send more troops to Afghanistan or pull out, he has yet to look at the city resolution.
Asked in an e-mail whether she supports the resolution, Coffey said “it needs to be discussed.”

And Amcan, do you really want to talk about Presidential recreational activity? GW Bush spent 490 days in Crawford and 487 days at Camp David while he was diverting 100,000 troops to Iraq and not catching Bin Laden. That's 1/3 of his presidency, by the way. Maybe this wouldn't be an issue today if he had concentrated on the people who actually attacked us on 9-11. "

Many people also haven’t realized that President Bush is NOT in power anymore. The current President has ZERO military experience, and it is showing, and will also show in the death rolls unless he mans up and gets some skin in the game, as he likes to read off his teleprompter. President Bush had the military experience to be able to conduct business as CIC from his Crawford property. That CIC has been GONE since January 2009 – HAS the current CIC concentrated on getting those people who actually attacked us on September 11, 2001? Oooops, no – have to go to my Tee Time… BUSH IS GONE FOLKS. It is Obama’s War now. Win and fish, or cut bait and turn tail. "

Mr. West is not riding the coat tails of his children, and that was a low and nasty comment. "

The recent elections have shown that the Afghani Govt is corrupt. Do we want to send more troops into a county without knowing who's running the country? Or the will of the people?
I say wait until the elections in Afghanistan are over and then know determine if we have a a pro-american govt or not. Diplomacy may work in the area.
AmCanblogger: you must be a dittohead because you definitely got the 'talking points memo" from Rush. "

Although I'm in favor of a troop surge for Afghanistan (it worked in Iraq), I feel that national or state issues should not be discussed by a city council. Stick to the local issues we elected you for. "

Hahahahahahaha!
So apparently Obama is "waffling" because he didn't get the valuable experience being AWOL from the Texas National Guard. I hope you didn't have a straight face when you were typing that one.
No, AmCan, you're right, it doesn't take any time at all to decide to send troops somewhere. It does take a long time to formulate a strategy to get them out.
He's not going to recklessly send thousands of our troops into harm's way without an exit strategy, which is one of the reasons he won the election. I would think that anyone who "supports the troops" would appreciate having an actual strategy while fighting a war. "

Sending more troops into Afghanistan does not go to the people for a vote.
A General who is in Afghanistan and had been given the job of running the war has said he needs more troops.
I never took how to run a war in school.
the General became a General because he knows his job.
The president is not a general running a war and has not ever been. Bush was not a general who had run a war. BBut he was wise enough to grant request that the Generals running the Afghanistan and Iraq war asked for.
He didnt put it on his calendar, he recognized that lives are in danger if there is not enough support on the ground and he made trying to keep our troops safe a priority.
Obama needs to realize every day he puts this issue on the back burner he is putting more lives in danger. "

I hate to correct you with facts but Bush left a request for more troops in Afghanistan on the table for 8 months before leaving office. A request that Obama had to fulfill when he took office. We won't even get started on his neglect of soldiers pleas for better armor or his disregard of our injured vets.

What have I done to ride their coat tails? My daughter donated $22K that she received for her sheep from very charitable donators to benefit the children and the pool program. I dedicate mor etimem to reading and researching American Canyon business than you can even imagine. Your jealousy is very troubling, I hope you get help. I am very proud of all three of my children and you would be so lucky to ride on their coat tails. I am sorry that you have nothing to ride on. OOPS I probably broke the rule with teh moderator. But then I sign my entries.
The Prop 8 comparison is rediculously apples and oranges. It was a constitutional amendment. It is the LAW and it was voted for by the majority of the voters in American Canyon. I swore to uphold the Constitution of California and the United States. There is no comparison between this and resolving that our troops deserve the best, including troop levels. All of you that keep arguing the war, good luck, but this resolution was about troops support, not the war or the President. TRUE TROOP SUPPORT- GIVE THEM WHAT THEY ASK FOR. "
Hear Ye wrote on Oct 27, 2009 11:52 PM:
It's also fairly easy for one to be suspicious that this is merely a petty political statement based on the timing. When a troop request goes unanswered for countless months with the previous administration and we don't have a proposed resolution until this latest PR show by the Republicans then one can easily come to that conclusion.
BTW I do agree with you that a previous comment towards you by someone on here was entirely disgraceful and ridiculous. "
