A car hit a cement truck on Highway 29 Friday morning in a crash that injured two people and caused the truck to spill some of its load.

At 8:30 a.m., David Sterling, 50, of Santa Rosa, was northbound in a 1988 Peterbilt cement mixer on the highway north of
St. Helena, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Adenech Meguffie, 46, of Angwin, was on Deer Park Road in a 1992 Dodge Sprint, attempting to turn left onto southbound Highway 29.
She entered the highway and hit the cement truck, which tipped over and spilled some of its load.

The highway was closed and traffic was diverted onto Silverado Trail until 10:40 a.m. while crews cleared the road and cleaned up the spill, according to the CHP.
Meguffie was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center with major injuries. Her passenger, Angwin resident Tsedale Shisaw, 56, was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

" These poor people will have much company if a 6th city is apporved in Angwin!

This spot is dangerous. How many more thousands would cross this intersection every morning?

Wake up Napa Valley. "

" this has nothing with approving Angwin development - how about a traffic signal? I've seen quite a few almost-wrecks from people trying to turn out from the Culinary Institute campus, as well as the intersection on 29 & Deer Park Rd. "

" How do you miss a cement mixer coming down the road?? I don't cross that intersection unless it's completely free of oncoming traffic. "

" Demo:
QVMC is a Level III trauma center. St Helena hospital has a basic ER. That means they are not equipped to handle a person with major traumatic injuries, as this person had. A trauma center has 24 hour coverage of a board certified trauma surgeon, specially trained nurses and respiratory therapists, all the equipment needed to care for a trauma patient, and operating room staff available 24 hours a day. This also means that an ambulance needs to bypass St Helena hospital if they have a trauma patient to go to the facility best able to care for them, which in Napa County is Queen of the Valley.
So if you have a sore throat or a cough, please, go to St Helena's "No Wait ER". But if you have life threatening injuries, you need to go to the Queen. "

" Napa Nurse, you are right on. If the patient has a brain injury or some sort life threatening issue they are usually flown to Memorial in Santa Rosa. If its a child they will go to Childrens in Oakland Sometimes they are brought directly to the Queen and they helicopter will be waiting on the roof. "

" What is a Dodge Sprint ? I know what a Dodge Sprinter is, but they didn't have those in 1992. "

" I was at the intersection of Deer Park Road and Hwy 29. This Cement Truck was quite far away, enough for myself and the car behind me to turn onto the Hwy. As I looked in my rear view mirror, I wondered why the car behind me hadn't gone, and then, to my dismay, it did! Right in front of this giant truck with a huge cement barrel turning (as it must have had a full load). The truck was not traveling at unsafe speeds by any means. But with a full load, how can you slow down enough to avoid hitting a car that pulls out right before you. Being that the driver looked to have tried to veer away from the car, the top heavy barrel pulled the entire truck over on its side after crashing into the driver's side of the small sedan. It was frightening to have seen this happen and very surreal. I wondered why the driver hesitated and then decided to go at the last minute. Perhaps the driver was being pressured by their passenger? Who knows? In speaking with my friend, the Rutherford FD Chief later on, he told me that many times large trucks look to be going slower than they are due to their size.
I really hope the driver is o.k. I said a prayer for them and their passenger and tried to help with the oncoming traffic to slow down as the other witnesses tried to speak with those who were injured . . . could've been avoided!!! "

" norcalchick: very good description of the accident. Pulling out in front of a cement truck is almost as bad as pulling out in front of a train !! And lol: is right on about a needed traffic signal. You should see the lineup of cars to get onto the 29 coming down from Deer Park and Angwin at certain times of the day. I go down to Pope Street to avoid pulling out there even if it is out of my way. Who decides about a traffic signal, Caltrans or St. Helena? Hopefully not St. Helena, then it will never happen. "

" Somehow it bothers me that a person from Angwin would be this careless. Doesn't matter if you woere "pressured by the passenger" or not. You are driving. Start making good decisions people! "

davie wrote on Oct 24, 2009 3:17 PM:

" And speaking of Large trucks looking like they are going slower than they are...how about CDF slowing down? You should see them barrel down the hill...without emergency lights on... "

" Definitely! There needs to be a light at Hwy. 29 and Deer Park. I take the Trail from Deer Park to avoid that impossible intersection. Additionally, a light there would reduce the traffic snarl on the Pope St. Bridge and Pope St., which people use to avoid the wait at 29 and Deer Park, not to mention that it is a safer route, considering.

Help us all, if they seriously consider developing a suburb in Angwin. "

John Richards wrote on Oct 24, 2009 10:27 PM:

" Some people won't be happy until every intersection has a traffic light!
The primary cause of this accident was extremely poor judgment by the car driver, not the lack of a traffic light. "
