W.H. Smith Wines & Wine Sensory Experience, a new tasting room at 1307 B Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, is offering classes on wine aroma identification.

T’Anne Butcher, daughter of Bill and Joan Smith, who make the wines, helps guests sharpen their appreciation of aromas of a wine’s bouquet, and learn about other factors that can influence perceptions.
Classes are held daily from 10 to 11 a.m. by appointment, at a cost of $30 per person or $50 per couple.

Graeser Winery, located at 255 Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga, offers a hands-on class called “Winemaker for a Day” for those wanting to know more about the winemaking experience. It takes place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, at a cost of $85 per person ($65 for club members). Wine enthusiasts learn the basics of winemaking and viticulture, experience the process of Bordeaux-style blending, taste Bordeaux varietals paired with hand-made chocolates, and smell and touch soils from different American Viticulture Areas.
If you're just looking for the “tasting” part of the wine experience, several new, newly refurbished and specialized tasting rooms include Vermeil Wines/OnThEdge, at 1255 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga.

Vermeil Wines/OnThEdge has hand-crafted wine barrel counters plus sports memorabilia from owner Dick Vermeil’s career as a Super Bowl-winning football coach. Since 1991, Vermeil, a Calistoga native, has worked with Paul and Mary Sue Frediani Smith on the highly acclaimed Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignon, one of multiple Jean Louis Vermeil and OnThEdge wines that have received 90+ ratings from Robert M. Parker, Jr.
Among the new tasting rooms is Rios Wine Company in downtown Calistoga, which features wines produced by three brothers and a cousin (Rafael, Manuel and Albert Rios, and their cousin Jesus Hernandez). Rios Wine Company makes sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and cabernet under the label Solovino. The tasting room is at 1345 Lincoln Ave.

To sample some vintages from Calistoga’s smaller wineries try the Calistoga Wine Depot, which specializes in pouring wines from “producers a bit off the beaten path.” The tasting room,  located in California’s oldest railroad building is features wines from Diamond Terrace Winery, Branham Estate Wines, Chelsea Vineyards and Voces Wines on Saturday tastings held from 1-5 p.m. each Saturday.
