6 p.m.NAPA — The Napa County district attorney says he is still reviewing the alleged assault case against Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable and does not expect any decision on possible charges for at least a few more days.

DA Gary Lieberstein said Monday on his media hotline that he has no new information to report and does not anticipate any decision until at least Wednesday or Thursday.
He says his office will take whatever time officials believe is necessary to reach “the appropriate and just decision.”

Defensive assistant Randy Hanson has alleged that he was assaulted by Cable during training camp and that his jaw was broken in the Aug. 5 attack at the team’s training camp hotel in Napa. Cable has denied the allegations.

" Why do I get suspicious when politicians see the opportunity for nationwide press coverage and decide to stretch it out for as much publicity as they can ? "

" can it be any more obviouse that napa is scared to do anything against the raiders in fear that they will leave if charges are filed. "

" Its obvious their dragging their feet. Quit being afraid that Evil Kienevil will leave town. Its not like they do much for the community. Closed practices hardly any interaction with the people of the valley. They could do so much more with youths when they are here, but they don't. "

" It would be interesting to compare the length of time this decision has languished in the D.A.'s office as compared with most cases of alleged assault. Is the Register capable of checking on that? "

" Very astute reason-ator. This has dragged on because the DA continued to push even when the "victim" refused to answer questions and name names. He only did so after being threatened with something like "obstruction of justice". Someone is trying to make a name for himself and wants to pursue this as a "workplace violence" case. Really? Isn't "workplace violence" a requirement in professional football? Sometimes a fight is just a fight. Way too much time and taxpayer money has been spent on this already. Enough. "

" I heard a funny thing on ESPN the other day in reference to this case. The broadcaster said "If I was going to commit a felony anywhere in the USA, it has to be Napa . I'd get to enjoy an extra 4 months on the outside. The DA must be too busy harvesting his grapes." How right he is. "

" Come on, file or don't file, but either way, state your reasons for doing so. This is getting embarrassing. "

" Even our good old DA loves the spotlight....charges should have been filed the day of the report of the incident.

I know of many much weaker cases right here in Napa and the DA filed charges right away. Our DA is a joke and has been for a while quite the power tripper "

" Umm...has it occurred to commenters that perhaps the DA is doing his job by investigating? You know, talking to the victim, the witnesses - that kind of thing? Hopefully he is treating the case just like any other alleged assault. A thorough investigation prior to filing charges saves time and taxpayers' money in the long run.

Consider too, that this is not the only case the DA has to work on - just the fact that it involves some well-known people doesn't automatically give this case priority. Too bad if he's not operating on arbitrary timetables dreamed up by others. "

" DA Gary Lieberstein said "Officials" need to reach the decision.

Well the Official Napan's are saying delay of game, you've been playing with Napa families for years over less of a crime, NFL rules over ride Napa's laws ?

it's 1st. and 99, time to move the ball DA Gary Lieberstein . "

" waiting...it is shameful this incident in our county. DA knows his job, Police and NFL may need reminder how Football is not just a sport in America. Its a international well respect game where Federation of International Football association has programs for helping other countries get the sport to the needy helping children in poverish lands and this game is only hope they have.

So, were waiting too "

" Take your time in filing. No need to made a hasty decision. Besides, isn't it punishment enough by making him actually coach the Raiders? "

y2kcbr wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:53 PM:

" Gary isn't the attorney that is actually handling the case. There are others in the office that prosecute as well. When people hear District Attorney they seem to forget that there are Deputy DAs as well. The right decision will be made in this case. Let the process unfold. "

Nice attempted hand off in the backfield !

This case is over 2 months old and so is the waiting game, You lost this one DA, you need to keep your other day job, what ever it is ? prosecuting all offenders, no way, Gary Liebersteinin the next election, yeah right . "

" Gotta love the excuses !!! A case that is getting national news and you think it has
been handed off to a deputy ? No, sorry this one is on the of the desk of the HEAD DA. If it were handed it off charges would have been filed and Gary would get less attention and someone may make a mess of it so just let it go away...
does coach Cable have a criminal record ???? I have a weird feeling there is a history stay tuned "
