NOTES AND QUOTES for a Sunday in the Napa Valley:

The state- and nationally-ranked Solano Community College women’s soccer team, which leads the Bay Valley Conference and is 10-1-2 overall, features seven players from the Napa Valley.
Natalie Loyola (center midfield), Sandy Garcia (center midfield), Yedith Martinez (outside midfield) and Natalie Guerrieri (center back) are starting for the Falcons, ranked No. 9 nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America junior college Division III poll. They are also ranked No. 1 in Northern California and No. 2 in the state.

Annelise Brumley (defender-midfielder), Ariana Gomez (midfielder) and Carly Dowis (outside midfielder) are also playing for Solano.
“We’ve got a good team this year, and our preseason was very, very strong,” Solano coach Jeff Cardinal told the Fairfield Daily Republic. “When you play the best possible teams — and you’ve even got some in your conference and you get to play them again — and you get the results, I think that’s why they’re recognizing us at that level.”

Loyola leads the Falcons in assists (seven) and also has two goals. Garcia has two goals and two assists, Brumley has two assists, Guerrieri has a goal and Martinez an assist for Solano, which beat Mendocino-Ukiah Thursday, 5-1, to improve to 4-0 in the Bay Valley standings.
Guerrieri is one of the Falcons’ top defenders, said Cardinal.

Solano carries 24 players on its roster. The Falcons are looking to win a third straight Bay Valley title.

“We’ve been able to get a lot of players a lot of playing time, and that can help us later, too,” said Cardinal.

Garcia, Martinez, Guerrieri, Brumley and Dowis all went to Napa High. Loyola and Gomez played at Vintage.

The Napa Valley College men’s and women’s basketball teams began practices for the 2009-10 season Thursday. The nonconference season starts in November.

Friday night’s Tamalpais (Mill Valley) vs. Justin-Siena football game at Dodd Stadium was voted by fans as the KTVU (Channel 2) High School Game of the Week.

Four other games around the Bay Area were also in the running.

Mike Gibson is listed on Philadelphia’s practice squad as a second-year guard out of UC Berkeley, but he won’t be traveling with the Eagles for today’s game against the Raiders at the Oakland Coliseum.

A sixth-round draft choice of the Eagles in 2008, Gibson was signed to the team’s practice squad on Sept. 5.

Kellie Detweiler scored a goal for Menlo College of Atherton in the Oaks’ 4-2 California Pacific Conference women’s soccer win over visiting Mills last month at Wunderlich Field.

Detweiler also played soccer for Vintage High and Solano Community College.

Asked by “ESPN 101 in St. Louis with the Fast Lane” Thursday on whether he gets the itch to coach again, Calistoga native and Super Bowl-winning coach Dick Vermeil said:

“I miss it. There is no question about it, but I don’t regret doing what I did because I knew it was time. I just don’t have the emotional and physical stamina to do it at the level that it has to be done, that’s all. You move off into the sunlight and get into the wine business, that is what you do.”

Vermeil spent 15 seasons as a head coach in the NFL and two years at UCLA. He is the only head coach to lead teams to victories in both the Super Bowl and the Rose Bowl. He finished his professional career with an overall mark of 126-114.

Vermeil is one of only four coaches in NFL history to lead two teams to the Super Bowl. His St. Louis Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV while his Philadelphia Eagles lost Super Bowl XV. His UCLA team upset Ohio State in the 1976 Rose Bowl.

Chris Adams, a 6-foot, 215-pound senior from Marin Catholic-Kentfield who has already rushed for 960 yards and 15 touchdowns, is one of the top players in the Marin County Athletic League. Adams’ father, George Adams, is a former Justin-Siena head football coach who also spent time as Vintage’s defensive coordinator.
