The last-minute cancellation of a free flu shot clinic at a mobile home park in American Canyon has not sat well with residents.
Napa County public health officials canceled the clinic Friday afternoon after Napa Olympia Mobilodge’s owner said he did not want the liability of having people on his property, said Elizabeth Emmett, spokeswoman for Napa County, said Monday. Napa County carries liability insurance, she said.
Napa County officials scrambled to send out cancellation notices Friday afternoon. Yet people did stop by the mobile home park for the flu shot clinic off and on all day, said Napa Olympia Mobilodge Park resident Al Stout.
The free clinic has been scheduled at Napa Olympia Mobilodge on American Canyon Road for more than a decade, handing out vaccines to people of all ages. The clinic served 116 people in 2008 and 80 in 2007.
On Monday, Ruben Garcia, a representative for Mobilodge owner Ken Waterhouse, called the incident a “big misunderstanding.”
“We are a private facility. We’re not open to the public at large,” said Garcia, who said he became aware on Friday of the flu clinic that had been scheduled at the park.
“We’re private property,” said Garcia, who declined further comment.
American Canyon Mayor Leon Garcia said he wants to find out what happened, adding the city will try to find an alternate site.
“It’s very important that seniors get their flu shot,” said Garcia, who works as a nurse at the Veterans Home of California at Yountville.
Emmett said Napa County Public Health may schedule another clinic later in American Canyon, possibly in the Public Safety Building at 911 W. Donaldson Way.
Residents at the park were not pleased.
Some were making alternative plans. Eighty-five-year-old John Flagg, a veteran, said he will drive to Travis Air Force Base while Clarence Schuman, 79, said he’ll drive to Kaiser in Vallejo to get his flu shot.
Diana Kingery, who does not get flu shots because she said they make her sick, was upset for her neighbors who wanted to receive their flu shots at Napa Olympia Mobilodge. Many of her neighbors, she said, either do not drive or cannot afford transportation to Napa, Fairfield or Kaiser Permanente in Vallejo.

This is also a reason we need to bring services closer to American Canyon. If this County can't figure that out, this article helps advocate that need. "
