Houston, we have a problem. Our database of readers is too big and we have to reduce its size.
When we started asking readers to register for NapaValleyRegister.com to make comments, we saw a small but steady increase in numbers. Now we are up to more than 10,000 registrations, although there are many people with more than one account.
If you are one of those people, look in your e-mail for a note from me asking you to pick your one account to keep while the other(s) are deleted.
Some of the duplicate accounts come from people playing one of our online contests and choosing a name other than the one used to make comments. Some chose a name, forgot it, and re-registered again a year or two later.
Whatever the case, we need to cut the list down.
If you received a note, please respond back. I am about one-half way through the registrations and will have all notes out by the end of next week.
If I do not have a response back in 14 days, the accounts get deleted.
Thanks for your help

Of course, from a database admin point of view, if comments are tied to user IDs and you are keeping comments for some sort of historic reference, this type of purge process could be a little more involved.
random name here: I would bet Dan is linking by email address. IP addresses are not a stable means of regularly identifying someone. People on home networks and small offices usually have a desktop IP in the range of 192.168.x.x. The unique IP gets attached to the router, but it is the workstation (PC) IP address that the browser sends to the server as the requesting host. "

I don't know who you hired for your database, but you are overpaying. "
