1:45 a.m.OAKLAND — A new audit scheduled to be released Thursday says that San Francisco Bay area transit officers need more training and presence on the area’s trains and stations.

The audit by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives comes in response to the New Year’s Day fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a white transit officer.
Since that shooting, former Bay Area Rapid Transit officer Johannes Mehserle -- who grew up in Napa --  has pleaded not guilty to the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Oscar Grant on a train station platform.

The study also says officers need to work with a more comprehensive use-of-force policy.
The organization was hired by BART to conduct the study. BART board members will discuss the findings at its meeting on Thursday.

Mehserle is a 2000 graduate of New Technology High School in Napa and also graduated from the Napa Valley College Police Academy.

" I don't understand why people think that the shooting of oscar was race related. It has nothing to do with race, Oscar wasn't shot because he was black. He was shot because his and his friends actions led to a dangerous situation on BART where innocent passengers couldve been hurt or killed. These actions led to the BART police having to come to the scene and trying to make order on a situation that was out of control with people who wouldn't listen to the police. Then a young officer messed up, wether he met to fire his taser or his gun he made a fatal mistake that definantly should cost him his job and he should serve some time in jail. But to think Johannes went to work that day with the intention of murdering a black man is just idiotic. "

" If someone is killed due to negligent homicide (murder), should the level of accountability be the same for a citizen killer and a trained police officer?

The gun and the badge are not a license to make deadly mistakes with impunity. Not in this country....yet. Check how the police operate on the street in Brazil, Russia, or just about any African country.

Some DA's are trying DUI's for murder now when they kill someone. They didn't set out to kill either, but someone is just as dead.

If you drive a car, you must act responsibly. If you have a badge and a gun, you must act responsibly. If you cause someone's death, there is a price to pay society. "
