NOTES AND QUOTES for a Saturday in the Napa Valley:

Kelsey Lew, a former Napa High School spiritleader captain, is attending UC Berkeley and is on the 17-member Cal dance team.
Lew, a 2008 NHS graduate, and the Cal dance team perform song-leading style cheers at Cal football games and pregame rallies, as well as at Golden Bears’ volleyball matches in the fall. Members of the team are also provided with the opportunity to travel to other campuses throughout the Pacific-10 Conference and other colleges to cheer on Cal during televised Cal football games.

In the winter, the Cal dance team supports the men’s and women’s basketball teams for audiences at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley. The dancers also get the opportunity to highlight their dance styles, talents and techniques by performing a variety of halftime routines at all home basketball games.
This is Lew’s second year at Cal and her first year on the Cal dance team. She is majoring in media studies and has 16 years of dance experience.

Lew had to make it through an extremely intense three-phased audition process before being selected.
There were three rounds of cuts in the tryout selection process.

The first round involved learning a dance routine and a cheer and performing it in front of six judges.

Those that moved on to the second round learned 12 short pom routines, one to each of the 12 Cal fight songs, in a two-week period and performed them in front of the two head coaches.

The third round came after summer conditioning and training.

The final candidates participated in an intense, physical training of eight hours a day, five days a week in July and August. In the middle of August, right before school started, the coaches made the third cut based on the summer training program.

The selected team members next attended college dance camp with the United Dance Association at UC Santa Barbara in preparation for their new season.
