NVST standout Sicard sparkles in Hawaii meet

Brittany Sicard of the Napa Valley Swim Team recently traveled to Hawaii as a member of the Pacific Swimming Western Zone All-Star Team.
Sicard, competing in the girls 15-16 age group, was a first-time Western Zone All-Star. She had her best showing with a third-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:18.85). Sicard also competed in the 200 breaststroke, the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, and the 200 and 400 medley relays.
The Western Zone Championships, held this year in Waipahu, Oahu, is a meet of All-Star age group teams from throughout the western U.S.
The Pacific Swimming team took second overall out of 14 teams, behind champion Colorado Swimming.

Playing in only his third game, University of Oregon redshirt freshman John Boyett came up big for the Ducks in their 31-24 win Saturday over Utah, intercepting a pass and returning it 24 yards late in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory. Boyett, a Napa High School graduate, started at free safety and had eight total tackles (three solo, five assisted stops).
“I was happy with my performance today,” Boyett said on the Oregon athletic Web site. “I had some good plays that we practiced and talked about with (defensive coordinator Nick) Aliotti. I am happy we won and that I was a part of this game.”
Boyett intercepted the pass at the Oregon 8-yard line.

Jason Lehman caught a 17-yard touchdown pass for Occidental College in the Tigers’ 31-27 loss to Linfield College at Patterson Field in Los Angeles Saturday.
Lehman, a wide receiver who went to Justin-Siena, had seven receptions for 58 yards.

Emily Talley was the top finisher for the University of Colorado women’s golf team, shooting rounds of 78, 71 and 74 for a 223 total as the Buffaloes placed 10th at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
Talley, a sophomore who is from Napa, tied for 22nd.

Stuart Miller of Napa won the boys 16 singles title at the Split Step Junior September Open, a Northern California U.S. Tennis Association event.
Miller had wins over Pedro Robinson of Stanford in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1; Colin Kelley of Atherton in the semifinals, 7-6(1), 6-2; and Sean Talmadge of Hillsborough in the finals.

Senior setter Lindsay Brown of Napa recorded her 3,000th career assist, helping the No. 13 Sonoma State Seawolves to a 3-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night in Seaside.
Brown finished with a match-high 46 assists, moving her all-time school record total to 3,021. She also had three kills, four service aces and six defensive digs.

Justin-Siena graduate Jimmy Cacho fired a 5-under-par 66 in round two on the way to finishing in a tie for 10th place overall for the Santa Clara University men’s golf team at the Michigan State Spartan Classic in Kingsley, Mich.
Cacho was 1-over-par for the 54-hole tournament. The Broncos placed sixth overall at the 13-team event.

Natalie Loyola and Yedith Martinez of Napa had assists for the Solano Community College women’s soccer team as the Falcons shut out Diablo Valley-Pleasant Hill 5-0 last week.
Solano is off to a 4-1-1 start.

Paige Cruz of Napa played the full 90 minutes and had seven saves at goal keeper for the Menlo College women’s soccer team in a 5-1 loss to Dominican University of California last week.
Cruz went to Trinity Prep.

The Santa Rosa Junior College football team is No. 19 in this week’s JCGridiron.com Dirty 30 rankings. The Bear Cubs are 3-0.
