Ex-Justin star Scanlon shining for Emerson

NOTES AND QUOTES for a Wednesday in the Napa Valley:

Kelsey Scanlon, a starting outside hitter for Justin-Siena High School for three years, is averaging 1.92 kills and 1.96 sets per game as a freshman for the Emerson College volleyball team. Emerson is located in Boston.
Emerson, which plays in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, is off a 7-1 start. Emerson took second place in the Days Inn of Campton Invitational Tournament, which was held in Plymouth, N.H. The Lions also won each of their four matches during the Emerson/Wentworth Invitational Tournament.

The 5-foot-8 Scanlon, who is from Sonoma, had 11 kills in a 3-1 win over Salve and 12 kills in a 3-2 win over Ramapo College. She is starting for Emerson.
She graduated from Justin-Siena in June with honors. As a senior, Scanlon was First-Team All-Napa County, as she registered a team-leading 11 kills per match for the Marin County Athletic League co-champion Braves.

Taylor Bickell of Napa tied for fifth in the girls championship flight of a Northern California Golf Association Junior Tour Fall Series event last weekend at Pajaro Valley Golf Club in Royal Oaks.

Bickell had rounds of 82 and 75 for a 157 total in the first Fall Series event.

The NCGA Junior Tour makes its next stop Saturday and Sunday at Haggin Oaks in Sacramento.

Napa Christian has had a difficult time with fielding a boys soccer team, but its girls volleyball team is a go for the 2009 season.

The Knights play in the CIF North Coast Section’s Small School Bridge League.

Kyleigh McAhren is averaging 1.89 kills and 1.89 digs per game for the Bucknell volleyball team, which is 3-6 overall.

Last year, McAhren was selected as the Patriot League/Baden Rookie of the Week (Nov. 10).

At Justin-Siena, McAhren was a four-time letterwinner in volleyball and three-time letterwinner in basketball.

The Napa resident also received the All-Academic Scholastic Team Championship Award for both volleyball and basketball as a senior.

KVON-1440 AM Sports Director Ira C. Smith will be the guest of the “KVON SportsVine” Saturday. The hour-long show, hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod, airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on KVON.

LPGA stars Lorena Ochoa, Suzann Pettersen, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis and Juli Inkster are entered in the CVS/pharmacy Challenge,  which will be played at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, Sept. 24-27.
