John Boyett started at free safety for the University of Oregon and had nine total tackles as the Ducks beat Purdue, 38-36, in a nonconference game Saturday night at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.
It was only Boyett’s second game for Oregon and his first career start. The Napa High School graduate and redshirt freshman had seven solo tackles and two assisted stops for the Ducks (1-1 overall).
Boyett starred for the Indians, earning special-mention All-America and State Player of the Year honors by maxpreps.com.

Lindsay Brown is off to some kind of a start as the setter for the Sonoma State volleyball team (10-0 overall).
Brown, a senior, was named the Molten/California Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 7-13, it was announced on Monday by the league office. Brown, a Napa High graduate, played a key role in helping the 13th-ranked Seawolves sweep Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles over the weekend.
The school’s all-time leader in assists, Brown is currently ranked fourth in the conference with 10.39 assists per set. She has also 43 kills, a .351 hitting percentage and 17 blocks, all while leading a team that has attained its highest national ranking ever.
Last weekend, Brown tallied 13 kills in 25 attacks with just one error (.480), while recording 71 assists and 14 digs.

Freshman forward Max Alvarez scored two goals to lead the Cal State Sacramento men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win last week over 15th ranked San Francisco.
Alvarez, a former Napa High star, scored in the 35th minute and 39th minute of the game.
On Monday Alvarez was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week for the week ending Sept. 13. He was one of 11 players earning the weekly honor.

Jimmy Cacho starts his senior year and his younger brother, Danny begins his sophomore year for the Santa Clara University men’s golf team, which will compete in five tournaments this fall. The Cachos are graduates of Justin-Siena.
Jimmy had five Top-20 finishes last season, including a sixth-place finish at the Mardi Gras Invitational in New Orleans. Cacho was the top Broncos’ finisher in seven tournaments last season.
“This is the strongest and most talented team that I’ve ever had here at Santa Clara,” Broncos coach Rob Miller said on the school’s athletic Web site.

Linebacker Jarred Pereira had eight total tackles (one solo stop, seven assists) for Cal State Sacramento in the Hornets’ 38-19 loss Saturday to host Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.
Pereira went to Vintage and continued his football career at Solano Community College and Santa Rosa Junior College.

Southern Oregon University linebacker Kevin Harrell was credited with two tackles in the Raiders’ 34-10 loss Saturday to host Portland State.
Harrell is from Napa and played football at Vintage.

Kevin Robledo leads Chowan University in receiving with 17 catches for 202 yards through three games. The Napa High graduate has started each game and also has two touchdowns with a long reception of 48 yards.
Robledo handles the punting duties for Chowan and is averaging 31.3 yards per punt.

Lea Wallace was 14th in the 5K race for the Cal State Sacramento women’s cross country team in a time of 18:18 during the annual Hornet Jamboree last Saturday at Granite Regional Park.
Wallace, a Vintage graduate, also runs track for Sacramento.

The Napa Valley Tennis Association women’s “B-1” team beat Petaluma Valley, 14-2, as Carol Zuniga (6-1, 6-3) and Sue Hanson (6-2, 5-7, 10-8) won in singles play.
Randi Johnson and Lynette Hunt (6-1, 6-1), Sets Guillen and Sue Hanson (forfeit), Beverly Holdsworth and Carol Zuniga (6-1, 6-0), Carmen Mackey and Jackie Bodor (6-4, 3-6, 10-8), and Chelsey Gelow Holdsworth and Janet Gelow (6-4, 6-2) won in doubles.

Third baseman Brett Wallace had a two-run triple as the Sacramento River Cats beat visiting Tacoma Saturday at Raley Field, 13-8, to advance to the Pacific Coast League Championship Series against the Memphis Redbirds. The series begins today. Sacramento is aiming for its third consecutive PCL title.
Wallace played baseball at Justin-Siena and Arizona State.
