The Philadelphia Eagles signed second-year guard Mike Gibson, their sixth-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, to their practice squad Sunday.

The Eagles waived Gibson, a Napa High School graduate, on Saturday to get to the mandatory 53-man limit. But a day later, he and four other players were signed to the practice squad. Teams are allowed to carry a maximum of eight players on the practice squad.
The NFL’s regular season starts this week, with the Eagles taking on Carolina on Sept. 13.

Philadelphia selected Gibson (6-foot-3, 305 pounds) out of UC Berkeley. He was on injured reserve with a shoulder injury as a rookie, but returned this year and played in each of the team’s four preseason games, starting the finale against the New York Jets.
He was All-Pacific-10 Conference Honorable Mention for Cal his senior year.

Spencer Schwandt of Napa scored a goal for the San Francisco State men’s soccer team as the Gators beat visiting Menlo College, 3-0, in a nonconference game last week.
It was the third shutout so far for San Francisco (3-1), which now moves into the California Collegiate Athletic Association portion of its schedule.

Schwandt went to Vintage High.

Max Alvarez tied the game at 2-2 on a penalty kick and the Cal State Sacramento men’s soccer team went on to defeat Alabama A&M Sunday at the Saint Mary’s Tournament in Moraga, 4-2.

Alvarez, a freshman from Napa, also scored the Hornets’ third goal.

Sacramento and Saint Mary’s tied for the title. Alvarez was named to the All-Tournament team.

Kyleigh McAhren had six kills, nine defensive digs and two set assists for the Bucknell volleyball team in a 3-1 loss Sunday to Providence at the Marist Volley in the Valley, which was played in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

McAhren is from Napa and went to Justin-Siena.

Emily Talley begins her sophomore season of golf for the University of Colorado by playing in the 2009 Hooters Women’s Collegiate Match Play Championship. The event began over the weekend and is being played at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The 16-team field will play on the LPGA Legends Course.

Talley had a very impressive freshman year, finishing in a tie for sixth place individually and being named to the All-Big 12 Tournament team for Colorado at the conference championships. Talley became just the fifth Colorado player to make the All-Big 12 Tournament team since the conference was formed 13 years ago.

She was also named as the most valuable player of the Colorado team, recording a team-low 75.42 season scoring average.

Talley attended Justin-Siena for three years before transferring to Robert Louis Stevenson-Pebble Beach for her senior year.

Napa’s Devin Whitmill has started each of the first two games of the women’s soccer season at forward for Whitworth University.

Whitworth went on the road and picked up wins over Gustavus Adolphus (1-0) in St. Peter, Minn., and St. Olaf College (4-0) in Northfield, Minn.

Whitmill went to Napa High.

Brian Cole returns to Williams College (Williamstown, Mass.) for his junior year of cross country. Cole, who is from St. Helena, ran very well last year to become the Ephs’ seventh man, just missing All-Region honors with his 36th place showing in the NCAA qualifier.

An Achilles strain held him back at the national meet, but a fast track season in 800- and 1,500-meter events positions him for a fine fall season if he can remain healthy, Williams said on its athletic Web site.

Williams took third place in last year’s NCAA Championship meet.

Solano Community College lost its football opener, 42-7 to American River-Sacramento Saturday night. The Falcons were behind 14-7 at halftime.
