The bright lights of Napa Memorial Stadium will usher in the 2009 high school football season Friday with freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams from Napa and Vintage playing in a three-way scrimmage.

With McClymonds-Oakland pulling out, it will be a three-team scrimmage, with Pioneer-Woodland joining Napa and Vintage.
Freshman teams will start at 3:30 p.m. JV teams follow at 5 p.m., and then the varsity teams at 7 p.m.

Pioneer and Vintage kick it off first on the north side of the field. At the same time, Napa will have an intra-squad scrimmage on the south end.
There are 15-minute and 12-minute sessions.

For one period, Napa and Vintage will have intra-squad scrimmages.
The 10-game regular season starts on Sept. 11 for Napa and Vintage.

Vanessa Jordan has started each of the first five games of the season for the Westminster College women’s soccer team. She is a sophomore midfielder who graduated with honors from Vintage High School in 2008.

Westminster, located in Salt Lake City, Utah opened the season with a 4-1 win over Chaminade University. But the Griffins have lost four in a row, falling to BYU-Hawaii (2-1), Hawaii Pacific (2-0), Weber State (2-1) and Utah Valley (2-0).

Jordan has taken 11 shots — with seven shots on goal — and has one assist.

She is attending Westminster, a private NAIA school, on athletic and academic scholarships.

In 2008, Jordan was named First-Team All-Napa County and First-Team All-Monticello Empire League for Vintage as a forward. She scored eight goals and added 10 assists her senior year.

The third-year varsity player also won Vintage’s Coach’s Award.

Freshman Max Alvarez of Napa scored in the fifth minute for Cal State Sacramento and the Hornets tied St. Mary’s College, 1-1, in a men’s soccer game Tuesday in Moraga.

Alvarez, a Napa High graduate, connected on a shot from 20 yards out to the upper far post. It was the regular-season opener for Sacramento.

Alvarez took four shots, including two on goal.

Rookie running back Glen Coffee is off to a very good start with the San Francisco 49ers, having rushed for 230 yards in the preseason so far. The club’s third-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft has impressed with his speed and power.

“I’m very excited about what I’ve seen from him,” head coach Mike Singletary said on the NFL Web site. “Glen’s a tough runner and he’s going to be a great addition to our football team. He really adds a lot to what we’re trying to do.”

49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye also likes what he sees from Coffee, who played at Alabama, and is excited about what he will bring to the team.

“He has been really exceptional for a rookie running back,” said Raye. “He’s way ahead of the curve in terms of pass protection and that’s unusual for a college back. He’s a rugged player, he’s mentally tough and he plays physical football. He has vision and the ability to get fast in the hole. He has a bright future.”
