NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:
Michael Gerlach, who has relatives in the area, had an outstanding senior season of baseball for Carmel High School, earning First-Team All-State Small Schools by CalHiSports.com after leading the Mission Trail Athletic League in batting (.555), hits, home runs and RBIs as a shortstop.
Gerlach, a three-year All-Mission Trail Athletic League player, was also honored by the Salinas Californian and Monterey Herald on the All-Monterey County team. He was chosen to the Central Coast Bay Area World Series team.
For the year, Gerlach batted .513 with 40 hits, 30 RBIs, seven doubles and three home runs. Gerlach — whose grandparents are Hank and Sally Gerlach of Napa — will attend Cabrillo College in Aptos and play baseball. He played for the Santa Cruz Seals over the summer.
Gerlach’s father, Tim Gerlach, was inducted into the Solano Community College Hall of Fame in 2007. Gerlach was an All-Conference third baseman for Solano during the 1977 and ’78 seasons who batted .354 and .370, respectively. He was the team MVP as a freshman and the captain as a sophomore for the Falcons.
Gerlach, a 1976 Napa High School graduate, also played American Legion and Napa Valley Joe DiMaggio League baseball. He transferred to UC Berkeley and played in the 1980 College World Series for the Bears. That same season he was also voted as the Most Inspirational Player while playing first base for the Bears.
Gerlach’s brother-in-law is Tom LeMasters, who is in the Napa High Athletic Hall of Fame.

Napa driver David Goodwill had a very good night of racing, turning in the fastest qualifying time and winning the 35-lap main event in the Northern California Modified Association wingless pavement sprint car division at All-American Speedway in Roseville Saturday.
He had to start in the back of the field, but made some excellent passes to quickly move to the front and take the lead by lap No. 7.

Rachel Pickett started for the Fresno State women’s soccer team and got off one of the Bulldogs’ six shots in a 2-0 loss to Long Beach State Sunday.
Pickett is a Napa High graduate.

Adriana Vasquez of Napa played for Sam Houston State in the Bearkats’ 3-0 loss to Oklahoma to start the 2009 women’s soccer season Sunday in Norman, Okla.
Vasquez played soccer at Vintage and Solano Community College.
Sam Houston State will continue its season-opening five-match road trip Friday with a trip to Denton to take on North Texas.

Champions Tour golfer Fred Funk widened his Charles Schwab Cup lead with his performance last week at the JELD-WEN Tradition. Funk holds a 356-point lead over Loren Roberts, who moved into second place.
Bernhard Langer, who had been either in the lead or in second all season, dropped to third. Larry Mize and Joey Sindelar round out the top five.
Mike Reid, who had earned no points all season, moved into seventh place with his victory in Oregon, worth double Charles Schwab Cup points.
Designed to recognize the Champions Tour’s leading player, the points-based program rewards both top finishes and week-in/week-out consistency at all 25 official Charles Schwab Cup events. Points are awarded to the top-10 finishers and ties and are based on the money distribution for each tournament. The winner of the 2009 Schwab Cup will earn a $1 million annuity.
The season-ending Schwab Cup Championship is Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at the Sonoma Golf Club. It carries a $2,500,000 purse.
