NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:
Brett Wallace went
4-for-5 and hit his ninth home run of the season, leading the Sacramento River Cats over the host Memphis Redbirds in a Pacific Coast League game Sunday, 10-7.
Wallace, a third baseman who was traded from St. Louis to Oakland in the Matt Holiday deal in late July, also scored two runs for the River Cats, who moved a season-high 29 games over the .500 mark. Sacramento’s magic number to clinch the PCL’s South Division title is now 12.
The solo home run for Wallace, a Justin-Siena High School graduate and former Arizona State star, came in the fourth inning and extended Sacramento’s lead to 10-2.
Wallace began the year in Memphis, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate.

Bob Soper, a retired Napa Valley Unified School District employee, visited recently with one of his former students, Brook Jacoby, who is in his third season as the Cincinnati Reds’ hitting coach.
Jacoby is a former Napa resident who attended Redwood Middle School for two years before moving to Ventura.
“Back then, in the spring, several of us teachers would play softball against the kids every day at lunch time, and Brook was always the first one out on the blacktop waiting to play,” said Soper, who worked as a P.E. teacher, coach and administrator at Redwood.
Jacoby was also the bat boy for Soper’s city league softball team. Jacoby’s dad, Jake, who played three years in the Philadelphia Phillies’ organization, played first base on that same city league team.
“Brook couldn’t believe that Tom Savage and I were still playing softball on the same team,” said Soper, who visited with Jacoby before a recent Reds-Giants game at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
He was drafted by Atlanta in 1979 and spent 11 seasons with three big league teams, including Cleveland. He finished his big league career with a .270 average, 120 home runs and 545 RBIs in 1,311 games. He was chosen to All-Star Games in 1986 and 1990.
