With three top-10 finishes this year — including a tie for fourth at the HP Byron Nelson Championship — Scott McCarron is enjoying a good year on the PGA Tour. The Vintage High School graduate and former Napa resident said his game is better than it’s ever been.

“I feel like when I wake up every morning I’m going to hit the ball pretty good, I’m going to hit a lot of fairways,” he said. “I’m driving it pretty darn straight. It’s a nice feeling.”
McCarron is playing in this week’s Legends Reno-Tahoe Open at Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, where he has had three top-10s with a second-place finish in 2004.

Training camp for the Cal State Sacramento football team — with local players Jake Croxdale (Napa), Jared Pereira (Vintage) and Carlo Trinchero (St. Helena) on the roster — starts on Monday. Due to NCAA regulations, the Hornets will not wear pads during the first two practices.

Sacramento has two scrimmages scheduled during the 28-practice slate.

The first will come at 10 a.m. on Aug. 22. The second will take place on Aug. 29 at 9:50 a.m.

Croxdale received the majority of work at running back during the spring and will look to continue to increase his role, Sacramento said on its athletic Web site. He was a freshman last year.

The biggest question mark on defense will be at linebacker, where the Hornets have to replace all three starters from last season. The contenders for the jobs include Trinchero and Pereira.

Western Athletic Conference coaches have picked the Fresno State women’s soccer team, which has Rachel Pickett of Napa, to finish third in the 2009 preseason poll.

The Bulldogs finished in second place last year and went on to advance to the NCAA Tournament after beating Utah State in the WAC Tournament championship. The ’Dogs return 16 letterwinners.

Gregory Lane Hunter of St. Helena completed his 16th consecutive San Francisco Marathon, held on July 26, in a time of 3 hours, 46 minutes, 54 seconds.

Hunter placed 917th out of 5,093 finishers and was 18th in his age division for the 26.2-mile race.

He has completed 86 marathons overall and has qualified to compete in his 15th consecutive Boston Marathon on April 19, 2010.

Rod Woodson, a cornerback/safety who played for San Francisco and Oakland during his career, will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame during ceremonies on Saturday in Canton, Ohio, birthplace of the NFL.

Woodson was a member of the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team and selected to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s. He intercepted 71 passes, which he returned for an NFL record 1,483 yards and 12 touchdowns.

He was named All-Pro six times and voted to 11 Pro Bowls. He played from 1987 to 2003.

“Just think about how long pro football has been going on,” Woodson said in an NFL press release. “And to think that I’m one of the select few to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, well, that’s just so surreal.

“It’s a huge individual honor and I’m just so humbled. It’s hard to express what it means deep down inside.”

The Hall of Fame Class of 2009 is a formidable one, with Woodson joining Bob Hayes (wide receiver), Randall McDaniel (guard), Bruce Smith (defensive end), Derrick Thomas (linebacker), and Ralph Wilson, Jr. (owner, Buffalo Bills).

ESPN will televise the entire induction ceremony at 4 p.m.
