NOTES AND QUOTES for a Wednesday in the Napa Valley:
Third baseman Brett Wallace’s tie-breaking solo home run to right field in the ninth inning gave the Sacramento River Cats a 2-1 Triple-A Pacific Coast League win over the host Portland Beavers Sunday.
Wallace’s blast came on the first pitch.
The former Justin-Siena High School and Arizona State star was traded by St. Louis as part of the Matt Holliday deal last month with the Oakland Athletics organization. Wallace was the Cardinals’ first-round pick — the 13th overall selection — in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
He was the Pacific-10 Conference’s two-time Player of the Year.

David Goodwill of Napa won the 30-lap main event of a Northern California Modified Association sprint car race Saturday at All American Speedway in Roseville. Starting at the rear of the field, Goodwill took the lead on lap 4. A caution flag came out on lap 16, bunching up the field for the re-start. It was Goodwill’s fifth win of the 2009 racing season.
Goodwill set the fast time for the evening with a 13.64-second lap, averaging 79.15 mph for the 3/8-mile paved track.
The local driver, who is with DDS Racing, also won the trophy dash, starting on the outside of the second row and taking the lead on lap 2.
Goodwill made it a sweep, taking the lead on lap 5 and winning the 10-lap heat race after starting at the rear of the field.

The sport of lacrosse experienced a big increase with a combined gender-participation total of 12,321. It’s an increase of 45 percent measured to the 2007 sum.
