The Work Party
It was my husband’s work party — a birthday party in Sacramento for three colleagues. My husband and I were looking for some well-earned time out to ourselves, but the babysitter had cancelled at the last minute.
Schools and the Constitution
In its last session, the Supreme Court made a ruling about the 4th amendment rights of students at public schools. In the case is Safford Unified School District v. April Redding, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that the strip search of Savana Redding, then a 13-year-old 8th grade student, was unwarranted and violated her 4th amendment right against unreasonable search.
Time to reinstate the draft
The news regarding the murders of five military personnel in Iraq by another American soldier, at a training facility, sickened me. It should not have come as a surprise. It was merely a continuation of the news from that area over a period of the last two or three years. The news media has been telling us for years about the alarming rate of military suicides, reports of family abuse, family murders, etc. Experts are inclined to blame a lot of the problem on combat-related stress. I have no doubt that the experts are, in a large part, correct. The news that I speak of is not new news. It dates back to the years of and following the war in Vietnam.

Dear editor, As I read the letters with a Fourth of July theme, a question comes to mind: What is the United States of America? Is it our flag, our military or our Constitution?
Road budgets explained
There was one big pothole on Highway 29 that I had driven over for years, I learned to look out for it every time I drove home, and there it would be. I could count on having to swerve around it. After a while I grew to like looking out for it, swerving on cue every time I went by.
Why do we have a death penalty?
I have often wondered about the logic behind the death penalty.
