Redistricting

Little did I know that I traveled through the Tannery Bend District on the fateful visit that brought me to Napa.

The Work Party

It was my husband’s work party — a birthday party in Sacramento for three colleagues. My husband and I were looking for some well-earned time out to ourselves, but the babysitter had cancelled at the last minute.

Schools and the Constitution

In its last session, the Supreme Court made a ruling about the 4th amendment rights of students at public schools. In the case is Safford Unified School District v. April Redding, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that the strip search of Savana Redding, then a 13-year-old 8th grade student, was unwarranted and violated her 4th amendment right against unreasonable search.

America is losing ground under Obama

Please consider these points, then read the last paragraph:

What stores would you like to see in downtown Napa?

As Register writer Kevin Courtney's article states, the city of Napa is spending nearly $100,000 to have a consultant come up with a plan for filling 105,000 square feet of new commercial space and another 76,000 square feet in older buildings that sit empty.

Energy — the next frontier

Roughly 240,000 miles above this blue rock is a metal plaque bearing the words, “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.”

Neighbors come before pop icons

Dear editor, We appreciated the “In case you missed it ...” editorial on July 9. Right on!

The world needs more of these people

Dear editor, To the person who found my wallet the morning of July 13, left in a cart at Nob Hill around 9:30 a.m., please accept my most grateful gratitude for you finding it and turning it in. I’m not sure if you are a loyal customer or an employee of Nob Hill, but I want to thank you sincerely for doing the right thing and turning it in. The world needs more people like you.

Use the clippers, watch the sprinklers

Dear editor, The letter from the person complaining about the school sprinklers running in the afternoon reminded me to do this (“Getting all wet at West Park,” July 3). I have written this letter in my head almost every morning.

High rents pose high hurdles

Dear editor, During the last two weeks there have been news articles, two editorials and letters to the editor regarding the present state of Napa’s downtown. The Napa City Council has now decided to spend another $100,000 to determine why there are so many vacant stores and what can be done about this problem. Apparently only an outside consulting firm can come up with the magic answer. The downtown’s major property owner has also announced the hiring of a high-powered firm to solve the problem.

Road budgets explained

There was one big pothole on Highway 29 that I had driven over for years, I learned to look out for it every time I drove home, and there it would be. I could count on having to swerve around it. After a while I grew to like looking out for it, swerving on cue every time I went by.

Why do we have a death penalty?

I have often wondered about the logic behind the death penalty.
