3:45 p.m.SAN FRANCISCO — One of the nation’s largest gay rights groups is urging activists in California not to go back to the ballot next year to repeal the state’s same-sex marriage ban.

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force said Thursday that too much work remains to be done changing the minds of voters who supported the ban in November.
The task force, which last year donated $283,000 to oppose Proposition 8, joins a growing number of gay organizations expressing reservations about rushing to overturn the measure.

Earlier this week, three groups representing black, Asian and Hispanic gays in California said they do not believe voter opinion has shifted enough to justify another costly campaign.
But other state activists are eager to try repealing the ban and already raising money and training volunteers for a 2010 vote.

Why waste more money and time, again? "

" I say push this into the 2010 election like there’s no tomorrow! Don’t wait; spend all of your money now while you still have it. The 2012 election is to far off, and you don’t actually think all those voters that voted “yes on 8” will remember do you? Na they won’t! So spend your money supporting a losing battle and spend it like a sailor on shore leave. "

And people wonder why California is in such a deficit, we should be pouring money into schools instead of squandering on useless issues such as this. "

But if the pro-gay marriage folks want to blow their wad on a useless 2010 attempt, let them go right ahead... "

" Just eliminate the ban on gay marriage and get it over with. Personally, I don't know why anyone would want to be married, gay or straight, but if they do, let them. Who is it going to hurt? No one is going to suggest you marry your dog or your camel or your cousin, but all rights should be equal. Don't believe the propaganda by the churches that spent millions to deny equal rights. Give everyone exactly the same rights and tune out the right wing dissenters who believe their own marriages will be affected by someone else's. Does what happens in your marriage depend on the people next door? No, it depends on how you and your spouse feel about each other. No one is going to be "forced" to perform a gay marriage just like no doctor is "forced" to perform abortions just because they are legal. Get over yourselves, people and mind your own business. "

And fifty years ago, I was blissfully unaware that some thought I shouldn't have been playing with my black friends in my elementary school.

I've just seen people throw out some labels and over-generalizations in what I think is an attempt to stereotype people as stereotypists. Apparently, it's not OK to stereotype people, but it's OK to stereotype them. "

" Strong words toxicavenger! I agree. I'm glad it got posted.
I don't know how this issue equates with the state spending more money. There's going to be an election anyway.

shrapnal: How much money will it cost California?? It's not frivolous if it determines the course of your life.

Besides being part of a stringed instrument, what's a fret?

JR: of course it can go ahead. This is a representative republic where laws are determined by a referendum and a vote. It's not up to you what can go on the ballot. "

" We should not spend more money on a 2010 election.
That is easy for me to say because I live in beautiful community where our two sons are not treated any differently because they happen to have two moms and where both my wife and I can coach little league teams and are valued members of our community. We remain legally married by the state of California.
For those gay Californians who don't have these circumstances, I am sorry that it won't happen tomorrow. In the meantime, take a vacation and get married in Mass in the fall when the leaves are changing. Give them the money for your wedding. California obviously does not need it.
That said, I say wait because we all know it is going to happen. We all know that gay marriage is inevitable. Unfortunately, it just takes time. 2010 is too soon. Keep having conversations with everyone you know. Explain the difference between "civil marriage" and "religious marriage". As you can see on these blogs, people are still very confused that the two are separate and believe silly things such as "churches will have to marry people they don't want to", "Heterosexual marriages will fall apart" etc

Wait for a 2012 election and if you look at the gap between Prop 22 and Prop 8, you will see where we are headed.

I say wait till 2012.

By the way, gay marriage is a bi partisan issue. Please quit accusing supporters of being "left wing liberals". I, for one am not and I know many, many Republicans who voted No on 8 and would do it again because they happen to believe in personal freedoms. "

First of all no one is throwing stones here. The discourse has been fairly civil.
But it's peculiar how the gay rights activists try to cloak themselves in the same mantle as those who fought for racial equality. When was the last time a gay person was made to sit in the back of the bus, or could only attend the inferior schools on the wrong side of the tracks? Let's face it, the gay marriage proponents can't point to real discrimination that affects their real benefits (under California law). "

" There is evidence The Holy Roman Catholic Church and The Church of Latter Day Saints was instrumental in organizing the voter repeal of prop 8: Primarily through the infusion of millions of dollars to influence the election. Sadly California demographics have changed enough that their efforts were successful. There was a time when California was a social leader and I find it ironic that the conservative strongholds of New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine and Iowa of all places, have legislation providing for same sex marriage. We've become infamous for allowing prejudice to interfere with civil and states rights.
In an article today concerning the Episcopal Church: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_rel_episcopalians_gays.
If Ca. couples arrange nuptials in a state condoning such unions returning to California to reside the state will eventually have no choice but to recognize same sex unions. It's matter of instituting a class action. Eventually the state will to have to bow to reason. "

" How about civil rights, John? We needn't be so specific as ethnicity. Violence, and persecution for sexual orientation has been just as heinous and violent as the days of Jim Crow. To fight injustice whether it be racial or sexual orientation is the same principle. "

" No, they haven't been made to sit at the back of the bus, merely denied the rights you enjoy, JR because of fear and ignorance, both clearly demonstrated by many of the posts in this thread., so yes, this is a fight for civil rights on the same level as the fight for equal rights for women, African-Americans, Hispanics, disabled persons...the list goes on.

I love hearing people say we would never discriminate against an African-American but yeah, it is okay to do so against someone who is gay or a lesbian, the disconnect is amazing. "

equalnotspecial wrote on Jul 29, 2009 11:21 AM:

" Ignorance and intolerance go together. While both can be cured, people must be motivated to overcome them. As some of the posts here demonstrate, homophobia is deeply ingrained in many people, and unfortunately, there is little motivation for straight people to overcome their prejudice against gay people. As demonstrated here, some are more interested in spreading homophobia rather than curing it.

In a country dedicated to the principal that all are created equal, there is no excuse for discrimination. Some day, liberty and justice for all will truly mean all.

Now, back to my fishing vacation, where the fish don't care if the fisherman is gay or straight. "
