Our man Jack
While the focus of any newspaper is what is taking place beyond the newsroom walls, our work lives are largely shaped by the people inside the building, the ones who make us laugh or make us miserable or make us get back to our desks and finish what we said we’d finish.
And I thought the dentist trip was bad ...
My son was so anxious to get into the preschool this morning that he skipped the front door and went to try to get into the playground gate. After I signed the kids in, I made my exit, but not before the requisite number of kisses and hugs. The kids knew that Momma was going to the tooth doctor.
Schools and the Constitution
In its last session, the Supreme Court made a ruling about the 4th amendment rights of students at public schools. In the case is Safford Unified School District v. April Redding, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that the strip search of Savana Redding, then a 13-year-old 8th grade student, was unwarranted and violated her 4th amendment right against unreasonable search.
The end is coming, but not because of climate change
Listening to several politicians on the news makes me wonder what planet they go home to at night.
What stores would you like to see in downtown Napa?
As Register writer Kevin Courtney's article states, the city of Napa is spending nearly $100,000 to have a consultant come up with a plan for filling 105,000 square feet of new commercial space and another 76,000 square feet in older buildings that sit empty.
The G-8 and climate change
This week’s Group of 8 summit has pretty much lived down to the low expectations it generated, yet it did produce a long-overdue agreement to fight climate change.
A run for the money?
Dear editor, Recently, Napa’s former police chief, Dan Monez, who retired at age 55 with a $100,000 taxpayer-financed pension, announced his possible candidacy for District 1 Napa County supervisor next year. Not to be outdone, Napa’s current mayor, Jill Techel, who has been striving to turn downtown Napa into a version of Rodeo Drive North, with luxury hotels, riverfront townhouses, upscale shops and restaurants, announced she, too, is considering running for supervisor of District 1. In a Napa Register article, Techel asserted that numerous people had approached her about running for supervisor.
Hondurans don't want Zelaya
Dear editor, I was born Honduran and live here in Napa. I have all my family in Honduras and I know what is going on there, so my question to you all at the Napa Valley Register is why you only report one side of the Honduran protest? Because no law-abiding citizen in Honduras wants Zelaya as our president. He is bad news for us. The only people that want him in are those that are just like him. There are those who are happy to see him go who are also protesting against him. Ninety percent of Hondurans wants him gone, but you seem to only focus on the low 10 percent that wants him in.
It's elementary - state leaders are failing us
Dear editor, If the California Legislature and executive branch were in Mrs. Brooks’ third-grade class, the lot of them would be in detention. Their actions are not worthy of third-grade intelligence. The leadership council (Gang of Five) demonstrates the stultifying behavior of the classroom bully. The budget crisis has brought out the worst of political malfeasance. Every politician is working to protect his reelection. The needs of the people in the state of California are secondary. If the delinquents in Sacramento befuddle, though, and pass a budget, they should be removed from Mrs. Brooks’ third-grade class. They would be much better being “home schooled.”
Road budgets explained
There was one big pothole on Highway 29 that I had driven over for years, I learned to look out for it every time I drove home, and there it would be. I could count on having to swerve around it. After a while I grew to like looking out for it, swerving on cue every time I went by.
Why do we have a death penalty?
I have often wondered about the logic behind the death penalty.
