Our man Jack
While the focus of any newspaper is what is taking place beyond the newsroom walls, our work lives are largely shaped by the people inside the building, the ones who make us laugh or make us miserable or make us get back to our desks and finish what we said we’d finish.
And I thought the dentist trip was bad ...
My son was so anxious to get into the preschool this morning that he skipped the front door and went to try to get into the playground gate. After I signed the kids in, I made my exit, but not before the requisite number of kisses and hugs. The kids knew that Momma was going to the tooth doctor.
Schools and the Constitution
In its last session, the Supreme Court made a ruling about the 4th amendment rights of students at public schools. In the case is Safford Unified School District v. April Redding, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that the strip search of Savana Redding, then a 13-year-old 8th grade student, was unwarranted and violated her 4th amendment right against unreasonable search.
Government has no place in the doctor's office
Comments about single-payer health care system from the uneducated or party affiliates on both sides can be great political diatribes.
What stores would you like to see in downtown Napa?
As Register writer Kevin Courtney's article states, the city of Napa is spending nearly $100,000 to have a consultant come up with a plan for filling 105,000 square feet of new commercial space and another 76,000 square feet in older buildings that sit empty.
In case you missed it...
Over the Fourth of July weekend, while millions of Americans were taking in festivities like the uplifting events in Napa County — including downtown Napa’s resurgent parade and the celebration at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville — other families were mourning.
Keeping local arts tradition alive
Dear editor, The July 5 Register article regarding the impact of the economic recession on small local arts organizations brought out some interesting points (“Recession adds to challenges for suburban arts”). On the one hand, corporate and individual donations have significantly declined. On the other hand, local arts venues offer great quality at bargain prices without the commute and parking woes of the big-city venues.
What really counts in the military
Dear editor, I disagree with Doris Gentry about gays in the military (“Gays in the military: Separate but equal?” July 2).
Our misguided support of Honduran despot
Dear editor, The media and the Obama administration continue to present the displacement of former President Zelaya of Honduras as a military coup. Nothing could be further from the truth. Article 39 of the Honduran Constitution creates a fail-safe against presidents attempting to change the Constitution to allow unlimited terms. Mr. Zelaya triggered that mechanism when he attempted to do exactly that in direct violation of Honduran law. His ouster was a legally proper and appropriate result of his own actions. Our president has as little respect for the Constitution of Honduras as he does for the Constitution of the United States, and seeks to overturn the rule of law and replace it with a despotic and corrupt dictator. He is supported in this by a number of communist and socialist authoritarians, like Chavez of Venezuela and Castro of Cuba, among others. Honduras has had a number of constitutions in the past, and they wisely built in safeguards in this version against just such attempts at tyranny. We would be wise to learn from their mistakes.
Violating the laws of economics
Dear editor, Can you name the city, state or a country where liberalism has been a success? What makes the liberal media think that the USA can throw out the Constitution and become a socialized country and be successful? Once again the principles of economics are being violated for returning the wicked profits from the free enterprise system to make things even. Where do you think social programs get their money?
Road budgets explained
There was one big pothole on Highway 29 that I had driven over for years, I learned to look out for it every time I drove home, and there it would be. I could count on having to swerve around it. After a while I grew to like looking out for it, swerving on cue every time I went by.
Why do we have a death penalty?
I have often wondered about the logic behind the death penalty.
