Striper, sturgeon bite solid in Napa River; go for rockfish in Bodega
By BILL RYAN
For the Register
Here’s a look at the latest local angling action:
Napa River
The good striper bite continues with more larger fish seen recently.
Look for some scarce live bait like mudsuckers or bullheads for the best action. Absent that, use cut bait like sardines and anchovies from Sweeney’s right off the bank.
Trollers are scoring with plugs like Broken-back Rebels and swim baits.
Fly guys and gals can hook up, too.
The lower river continues to be one of the best sturgeon sites in the whole Bay Area.
Soak a ghost/grass shrimp “cocktail” — add a lamprey eel strip to see that it makes a difference.
Lake Berryessa
Look for kokanee at 50 to 70 feet, and troll Pink Splatter RGT spinners and dodgers or UL spinners in front of Skier’s Cove.
I’m told that Rocky Mountain Tackle dodgers and Purple Assassin spinners are working at the Big Island in the 30- to 40-foot band.
We had a solid report of some good-sized bass going for trolled lures near the Narrows, too.
Clear Lake
Ruby (age 9), Ansel (11) and Max (12) Risch took their dad, Eric, fishing on Father’s Day.
Max was the top rod with the biggest of the large mouth bass in the three-pound range.
Ruby, assisted by her dad, reeled in the second of the lot — almost as big. Live minnows did the trick.
Eric said they tried a variety of other methods to no avail. Fishing off of a pontoon boat, they had lots of room for their lunch and a little Father’s Day quiet time on the water.
Bob Rider at Lakeshore Bait and Tackle (994-FISH) reported that fishing is tough.
He suggests targeting catfish. They have been willing to bite on minnows, mackerel, shrimp and crawlers.
Bring some chicken livers, too.
California Delta
The word on black bass fishing here is to toss a red crank bait running down to three feet, root beer w/flake Senkos, big drop shot worms and frogs in the slop.
We’re going to try each of these this week (too late for this issue).
I’ll post you on results next week.
Baja California
Jonathan Roldan’s latest fishing report from La Paz was crammed with photos of huge dorado.
Now is the time to target these beautiful, strong fish. Apparently, the prices are right, too.
Check it out on his Web site, www.tailhunter-international.com.
Bodega Bay
Here’s why the fishing is tough in the salt right now.
Look at these negative weather statistics for Monday, June 22:
• Northwest winds at 21 miles per hour, gusting to 25.
• 10-foot waves, with dominant wave period of nine seconds.
• Atmospheric pressure 29.79 and trending down.
• Water temperature is 50, air temperature is 53.
Don’t despair, the rockfish bite is very good — and the wind won’t blow every day.
