Cats!

This week, the Register published a note about the sighting of a mountain lion near Old Sonoma Road.

And I thought the dentist trip was bad ...

My son was so anxious to get into the preschool this morning that he skipped the front door and went to try to get into the playground gate. After I signed the kids in, I made my exit, but not before the requisite number of kisses and hugs. The kids knew that Momma was going to the tooth doctor.

Gays in the military: Separate but equal?

I read with great interest the guest editorial by Shalikashvili in the June 22 Register “Gays in the military”).

An Iraqi holiday

Iraq is boisterously celebrated a new national holiday — National Sovereignty Day — to mark the withdrawal of most U.S. troops from its cities this week. Though the observance was orchestrated by the government of Nouri al-Maliki for its own political purposes, there was something real to toast. Two and a half years ago, when fresh American forces deployed across Baghdad, Iraq appeared to be spiraling toward sectarian war and possibly splitting into pieces. Today it is as peaceful and prosperous as it has been in decades, and far freer; violence is down 90 percent from its peak and most of the country's political forces are focused on competing in upcoming democratic elections rather than fighting in the streets.

Speak out against scary demonstrator

Dear editor, This letter is regarding Iris Barrie’s June 19 (“Demonstrators infringe on others rights” June 19) and Kellie Miller’s (“Visual assault on Jefferson Street,” June 22)  letters about demonstrators and the visual assault on Jefferson Street.

A clunker of a law

Dear editor, The EPA ranks reuse as one of the highest forms of recycling. However, Congress is making a critical mistake which will have negative consequences on the environment.

Abortion and free speech

Dear editor, I am writing in response to Iris Barrie’s letter dated June 19 (“Demonstrators infringe on others rights”) and Kellie Miller’s letter dated June 23 (“Visual assault on Jefferson”).

Road budgets explained

There was one big pothole on Highway 29 that I had driven over for years, I learned to look out for it every time I drove home, and there it would be. I could count on having to swerve around it. After a while I grew to like looking out for it, swerving on cue every time I went by.

My Fathers Day thoughts of my Dad

Everyone has a person who influenced their lives above all others. Just about everyone I know can identify someone who has been instrumental in making them the person that they are -- from the grandpa who taught him how to ride a bike, to the elderly neighbor who taught her how to make really good brownies. We all have someone who has been a constant source of support, a good shoulder to cry on, and an endless supply of good advice.
