Cats!

This week, the Register published a note about the sighting of a mountain lion near Old Sonoma Road.

And I thought the dentist trip was bad ...

My son was so anxious to get into the preschool this morning that he skipped the front door and went to try to get into the playground gate. After I signed the kids in, I made my exit, but not before the requisite number of kisses and hugs. The kids knew that Momma was going to the tooth doctor.

The Jefferson Street protester on life, freedoms

As the guy responsible for the demonstrations infringing on others’ rights in front of Planned Parenthood, I find this dialogue is most encouraging. As a guy who invested two years in combat, fighting for the principles enunciated in our Declaration of Independence and enshrined in our Constitution, I find the freedom to express even very controversial opinions very precious.

Budget 'drills' show need for reform

While waiting for the state Senate to convene Monday, the California Channel, a public affairs television service, filled in by broadcasting a recent conference on the burgeoning movement to fundamentally overhaul California’s dysfunctional state government.

Even a few homes have big impact

Dear editor, I read with interest the article on June 20 regarding the city housing plan, “City OKs housing plan.”

Honest debate requires scrutiny of sources

Dear editor, I wish to comment on Mr. Arthur Pena’s June 25 Your Turn commentary “Questioning authority, in the spirit of truth-seeking.” Mr. Pena correctly points out the public’s right to challenge arguments that cite the Bible when the subject is public policy and those who “argue from the authority of the Bible” should expect such challenge and should be prepared to defend their views. Honest debate on public policy deserves scrutiny of the sources of both sides of the argument.

No such thing as 95 percent cured

Dear editor,  President Obama’s recent statement that he is “95 percent cured” of his smoking addiction portrayed a fundamental misunderstanding of the recovery process. He is a user who is trying his best to minimize his habit. He is not, as he claims, a person in recovery, and it is a slight to others who are in recovery for him to say so.

Road budgets explained

There was one big pothole on Highway 29 that I had driven over for years, I learned to look out for it every time I drove home, and there it would be. I could count on having to swerve around it. After a while I grew to like looking out for it, swerving on cue every time I went by.

My Fathers Day thoughts of my Dad

Everyone has a person who influenced their lives above all others. Just about everyone I know can identify someone who has been instrumental in making them the person that they are -- from the grandpa who taught him how to ride a bike, to the elderly neighbor who taught her how to make really good brownies. We all have someone who has been a constant source of support, a good shoulder to cry on, and an endless supply of good advice.
