A 26-year-old Calistoga man was shot and killed early Monday morning on North Oak Street in Calistoga, marking the first reported murder in Calistoga in 22 years.

Luis Octavio Carrillo was gunned down on the 1400 block of North Oak, near the Napa County Fairgrounds, at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, according to Napa County Sheriffs Lt. Tracey Stuart.
Calistoga police responded to calls of shots fired just after 1:30 a.m., Calistoga Police Chief Jonathan Mills said. The reporting party lived in an apartment near the scene of the crime.

When officers arrived, they found Carrillo, shot and lying in the street, according to Mills. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses report a man running through a nearby apartment complex at about the time the shots were fired, he said. Investigators found broken glass near the body, which they believe came from a car.
“We believe a small, blue compact vehicle, like a Honda, was involved,” Mills said.

Carrillo lived in the neighborhood and was identified through the family.
Mills said police do not have a suspect. He added that there is no indication that the shooting was gang-related. Calistoga PD is working the investigation with the help of the Napa County Major Crimes Task Force.

The last murder in Calistoga was in May 1987, according to Mills, when an elderly man killed his terminally ill wife.

" Now I'm Not Saying This is Gang Related But I Read Last Week or so When A Boy Got Jumped By Some Gang Bangers Going To Get Cookies Milk For His Dad In Calistoga Or St.Helena. Up Valley Has Got Pretty Bad These Past Years With Crimes Like This I Told You Napa County Is No Little House On The Prairie Town No More I Hope The Victim Is OK. "

" If there are no indications the shooting is gang-related, why is there spectulation that it might be? I think Napa Sheriff might be getting a call to investigate this crime. "

" whether or not this is gang related, Napa county is still a great place to live. You could live somewhere else where this happens daily and even a couple of times a day. This may not be the "little house on the prairie"town...but we are far from 100+ homicides a year like other cities in the bay area. "

" wonderdog: first of all, just curious as to why you capitalized every word? second, up valley is safe. napa valley in general is safe. i don't know of a town that is without some crime. according to the article the last murder in calistoga was in 1987 and even then it was a mercy killing. i think that is a pretty good statistic if you ask me.
on another note, my thoughts and prayers go out to mr octavio's family. "

" Crime in Napa isn't that bad since we neighbor Vallejo (where's there no Police), Lake County (meth lab haven), Santa Rosa (gangland) and fairfield (highway to crime). Overall, we are better off than they are. "

" I Only Read The News And Speak My Mind I Don't Prey On Blogger"s All That I'm Saying Is It's Got Bad Around Here And I Can Capitalize On Whatever I Want.. This Is A Horrible Crime "

" wonderdog, I think people are just trying to kindly point out that your position doesn't make much sense in light of the statistics. I live and work here, and I don't feel a sense of threat in the up valley communities.

The random capitalization is certainly your choice, but it does tend to undermine one's credibility. "

" wonderdog: i think it is great you speak your mind! i am not criticizing you for it...i am always open to hear other peoples opinions and quite often i find myself agreeing. however, in this case i don't. oh and the the reason i asked why you capitalized every word is because it stood out. your comment was the first here and it threw me a bit...to be honest i had a hard time reading it. but heck, i write in all lowercase... "

Napagrrl wrote on Jun 29, 2009 7:18 PM:

" Hmm, wonderdog, I agree with upvalley in that statistics don't seem to agree with your position. Further, you WOULD be more credible if your grammar, punctuation and, yes, use of capitalization were "standard." "

" shgirl - Wondering why you use NO capital letters......

Oh what a shamble the simple task of writing properly has become, from the use of capital letters to punctuation and spelling.

I'm sorry to hear of yet another senseless fatality in our valley. "

" This killing may or may not be gang related...but there is no doubt in my mind that this was personal, and there is a motive - we just don't know who and what yet. But as police investigate further, I'm sure they'll unearth it. We don't have "drive by" or "run by" shootings in this valley.

As for gangs in the valley, OF COURSE THEY'RE HERE!!!! Just walk through Calistoga and look at the tatoos on some of the locals. They say "Gang" and "Prison". Look at the colors - North vs. South. Wake up people! The gangs are alive and well in the valley. "

" It's a shame that it's more important to some you the way some people type or writes their comments. The life of a young man who worked really hard for his family was taken, nobody knows why (yet).
I hope that the police from Calistoga and the county can solve this homicide and find the responsible for this act whether is the girlfriend or her ex boyfriend.
Prayers to his family and specially to his parents who i believe live in mexico. "

" lol

I would like to just say that I hope you are not saying that people with tattoos are all gang related or from prison. My husband is hispanic and yes he's legal! he has tattoos all over he is not in a gang , he is a great dad and person and would help anyone in need. unfortunetly we live in a judgemental society that should probably take a look at there own lives. "

" Calistoga has a lot of really good officers, some of whom are great investigators. One homicide in 22 years ain't bad. Napa Valley is like the "Eye of a storm" when it comes to crime. Thank your local law enforcement agency for that. "
