A 26-year-old Calistoga man was shot and killed early Monday morning on North Oak Street in Calistoga, marking the first reported murder in Calistoga in 22 years.

Luis Octavio Carrillo was gunned down on the 1400 block of North Oak, near the Napa County Fairgrounds, at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, according to Napa County Sheriffs Lt. Tracey Stuart.

Calistoga police responded to calls of shots fired just after 1:30 a.m., Calistoga Police Chief Jonathan Mills said. The reporting party lived in an apartment near the scene of the crime.

When officers arrived, they found Carrillo, shot and lying in the street, according to Mills. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses report a man running through a nearby apartment complex at about the time the shots were fired, he said. Investigators found broken glass near the body, which they believe came from a car.

“We believe a small, blue compact vehicle, like a Honda, was involved,” Mills said.

Carrillo lived in the neighborhood and was identified through the family.

Mills said police do not have a suspect. He added that there is no indication that the shooting was gang-related. Calistoga PD is working the investigation with the help of the Napa County Major Crimes Task Force.

The last murder in Calistoga was in May 1987, according to Mills, when an elderly man killed his terminally ill wife.
